POSTMASTER MANUSCRIPT ENDORSEMENTS - General Topic

Postmaster Manuscript Endorsement or 'PME' were frequently used at post offices yet to receive a circular datestamp and usually were comprised of the PO name and the date of posting. Such markings are often tied to barred numeral cancels on the affixed stamps.

MORIARTY ROAD / MORIARTY

I have just described the two covers below for a forthcoming auction.

What particularly interested me (besides locating previously unrecorded PME's) is that the earlier cover (from 1875) is endorsed MORIARTY whereas the latter cover has MORIARTY ROAD (1876). I have always thought that the name of this office (formerly NEW GROUND) was named MORIARTY ROAD and then shortened to MORIARTY but these PME's suggest that both versions of the office name may have been interchangeable.

Any thoughts?

P.S. MORIARTY wasn't issued with a cds until 1879 and this was inscribed MORIARTY-ROAD
