New Early use date for Regatta Point T1 of 2nd April 1900. The post office opened on 1st April 1900 and prior eud was 22 May 1900.

Risdon (1) post office opened on 1.7.1864 but has its cds has an early used date of 8.9.1892. I was happy to pick up this one dated 5.10 .1891 shaving nearly eleven months of the eud.

Then I saw this one on ebay dated 4.12.1889.

Given the office opened in 1864 there is a 25 year gap before the eud so another eud has potential to appear.

Slept in while this one went off but have it here for the records. Queenstown circle stops has an eud of 8.7.1897. This example dated 26.7.1897 does not take a lot of time off as far as euds go, but it is a couple of weeks.

I had put the image of this Hobart cds on the identification index as I was unsure if it was the Type 1(ix) Fig 11 in the Green Books and the recent Compendium or the Hobart Type 1(iii) (no stops) in Courier 58 December 2014. I believe it is the Type 1(ix) and if so it had a late use date 12 Feb 1902 which can now be revised to Apr 4 06. A whole four years so it begs the question where was it used in that office. Given the indelible blue pencil marking it may have been in the registerd office as a standby cds. Any thoughts appreciated.

RHYNDASTON Type 1 with obvious smaller '2' in 'year ....... has anyone noticed this before?

One could assume that it was used for all or much of 1912 .....do you have an example with a 'normal' 2 or one like this?

Hi Ross,
The Rhyndaston Type 1 (solid stops) cds is an interesting case for numeral variations. Unlike the abnormal date slugs of the Campbell Town cds of the same period, where the date slugs were very rudimentary, the Rhyndaston cds date slugs all look like they were made by a professional engraver.
Variations in the day/year date slug go back as far as 1902 in my collection. As can be seen in the image provided the "2" in the day and year on the 1d dated SP 12 02 are both different. In the 4d dated MY 28 12 the "2" for the day is different to the year, and also different to that used in the 1d of SP 12 02. This is not the only date variation for this post office during the Pictorial period. Differences are also found in the "5"s, "3"s and "8"s. Examples of all are shown in the image provided.

At this stage I have no explanation and such may have well been lost in the mists of time. We are lucky with Rhyndaston as most of the cds were "Sock on the Nose" and this makes examination of these quirks much easier.
The aim of my collection was always to have sufficient examples of each cds for comparative and examination purposes. So I suppose it helps to be a hoarder/accumulator or ocd (perhaps not ocd!). Hope this helps.

On 13th April 2021 the late use of the Hobart Type 1(ix) cds was taken out by approximately four years from 12.2.1902 to 4.4.1906.

A recent find has taken the early use date back by two days to Ju 5 1900 from 7.6.1900. Not much but shows there is more out there waiting to be documented. This cds is Fig S11 in the Green Books, Type 1(ix) in the Compendium, and Type 1(iii)(no stops) in Courier 58 December 2014.

In April 2021 an unrecorded Hobart cds was discovered. This is best described as a Type 1 with cross stops. date in two lines with year in two figures. This cds dated JY 3 00 was placed in the TSA Online Auction #46.

This has been the only recorded example and confirmed as Hobart Type 1(xii). A second example has now been discovered. It is dated NO 28 00 and is also on a 1/- Tablet. Pays to keep those eyes open for opportunities.

I am interested in trying to answer Ross' "Query: Paid at Launceston 1912". Or at least get a definitive description of the Type 4R steel datestamp.
Volume 1 of the Green Books describe the image shown by Ross as "Launceston Special Useage Markings Type 6. "circular date stamp 26mm in diameter PAID AT LAUNCESTON - TAS with dash stops either side of TAS. Date in one line with time at left. Only one copy seen dated 11.1.12".
In volume II it continues " Type 6. This cancel is now RRR. The earliest date now seen is 15.12.11 and the latest date seen is 23.10.15 (Fig.S17.). However Fig S17 lacks the dot after "TAS" but has the dash. I consider this just another Green Book omission. There are enough, but the books are an invaluable reference source.
Hardinge's Compendium describes this cds as Launcest Paid Type 4R(i) has extended the late use date to 5.10.1916 with reference to Fig. S17 in the Green Books. But in chapter 1, Part 1 on steel circular datestamps there is no description of a Type 4R cds.
I feel If I had to catalogue this cds it would be Type 4aT but the Type 4 cds did not appear until the early 1920's. So the conundrum.
I am going through the Launceston cds now looking at rarity ratings on codes etc and it would be appreciated if someone else could put in their tuppence worth.

The Paid at Hobart/Tas Type 4 CDS with the rate in the date line is Type 4R.

I have just listed this rubber cds for auction

This type R1a datestamp is the same as the Type R1c listed in JH's book ..... apparently was is a typo ....there is no such thing as a Type R1c cds!
Please note that the date on this "discovery" is over 2 years earlier than the published ERD (1 DE. 1913)
