The "Blank" cds

#1 Post by A. Collector » Sat Oct 24, 2009 9:20 pm

The cds without town name engraved was obviously used in a relief capacity.

What evidence is there that it was used at Campbell Town?

What rarity rating does it deserve?

Definately used at Campbell Town. I had two on postcard at one stage, both tied by address. Sadly, no longer have either. Was fowarded to replace Type 1 when this developed problems and covered most of the period until Type 2b arrived in late October/early November. It is without a doubt the former canceller used at Mills Reef that would have been replaced by the new Alonnah CDS by then. CDS probably filled with molten lead as a stopgap and pressed into use. One of those curious "relief" CDS such as the numeral canceller filed down to become a series of dots(which is also very scarce and I have no idea at all where that was used).

Here's another example that went across my desk earlier today heading towards the 'to auction' basket.

Same date as example posted above - 10.OC.1910

Here is another example - from a recent mixed lot on eBay .
Interesting all three examples here are dated in the first half of October. John Hardinges listing gives erd 7/10/1910 and LRD 12/10/1912, so theres nothing in these exmples to suggest the canceller was in use for more than 5 days, whihc makes it rather scarce!
