The stamp shown in the attached image was seen on ebay recently. It appears to be the Hobart Duplex Type 1 (vi)(circle stops) code O, however it is missing both the date and the circle stops but leaves a full outer rim impression of the cds.

Latest known date for normal use of this Duplex is 22.12.1899 but it was later used occasionally to cancel registered mail and has a late use date of 17.3.1902. This Duplex is rated 6 S+ on Pictorials and as the latest known normal use date is 22.12.1899 should therefore only be seen on registered mail.

There appears to be a partial imprint of the Registered stamp in the top right hand corner of the image.

Does anyone know why the date and circle stops are missing, have seen this before on another Pictorial, or have a logical theory as to what could have happened.

Hate to admit it but I am stumped. I have a Hobart Type 1 cds on the way as per the image shown. I believe it is the Type 1(iii) no stops described in " A Guide to Circular Date Stamps on the Tasmanian Pictorial Issues 1899-1913" as per John Hardinges ratings guide in our Courier 58 of December 2014. This would make it rated 12 RR+.
In the "Post Office and Datestamp Compendium" with John ratings and information, recently published, it would appear to be Type 1 (ix) rated 3R and has an early use date of 7.6.1900 and a late use date of 12.2.1902.

The stamp shown in the image is as per Fig S11 page 117 of the Green Books but has a use date of April 4th 1906. Actually it is Fig 11 but in the Special Useage Markings section so "S11".

I don't know if I have been looking at this too long or have missed something. I thought Pictorials and cds on Pictorials were my strong point, but obviously not!

Thanks John. I wouldn't have come up with Swanton because it doesn't look like any of the Swanton manuscripts that I've seen. Good to know.

I need a bit of help here. I know it is a ratty example but could this be First Allocation 63 or 65. Believe the first numeral is a "6" and it looks like the last is a "5", but this is unlikely as it would make it Three Hut Point. If it is a "3" making it "63" of Launceston it does not look like my current example (clipped and not a full strike) of "63' of Lonny. Better and more experienced eyes would help please.

I would say 65 John. You can see the ball on the foot of the 5. Cannot be 29(which is a much rarer number in any case).

Found this rather poor partial Burnie cds and had it sorted into my Type 1(solid stops)(i) but that cds has a late use date of 2.9.1901 against that of AP 17 06 on the image shown. It does not match any other of my Burnie Type 1 cds due mainly to the narrow lettering of "Burnie" and the small space between the town name and "Tasmania". The narrow "U" of Burnie in this cds is different to all other Burnie cds in the period and only similar to the T1(solid stops)(i).
I do not have any Burnie Type 1(solid stops)(ii) for comparison and wonder if it is that cds. The Burnie Type 1(solid stops)(ii) is rated rare in the state period but given I have many pages of Burnie cds for the state period if it is that particular cds is it rarer than indicated? Use date for this cds is 1.4.1906 - 1.9.1917 and is 5R in the Commonwealth period.

It is indeed Burnie Type 1(dot stops) (ii). It's quite a hard cancels to find. I cannot really put my finger on what it was used for. It's mainly seen on normal postage rate stamps, but it just really quite rare.

I would like to get more eyes on this Hobart PAID marking to determine the month of usage. The marking is on a piece which also shows the postmaster endorsement of "Ouse 10,12,54". Unfortunately, the Ouse postmaster at the time, Charles Higgins, was month challenged and all of the known endorsements are of December regardless of the month the letter was mailed. From the Ouse covers or material seen, the day and year are always correct. As a result, I'm trying to determine the month of the marking below. I believe it is JY (for July) but would very much like confirmation. Any assistance or comments are welcomed.
