Torquay manuscript cancellations occur on Courier and early Chalon issues. Here are four examples from recent auctions:

The manuscript cancellations on the two Couriers show a distinctive curly 'T', but those on the Chalons appear to be in two different hands. The manuscript cancellation on the 4d Chalons looks to be in the same hand as an example on cover, whose photograph is shown opposite Page 108 in the Green Book, Part I.

EARLY MANUSCRIPT CANCELLATIONS - POST IMAGES/ANY QUESTIONS??

#2 Post by Ross Ewington » Thu Apr 08, 2010 2:43 pm

I have come across this rather attractive example of a mss cancellation
from Torquay dated 15/10/58 on a strip of 2d yellow-green Chalons.

Has anyone got images of mss cancels from Torquay that they would like to share
with us on this topic?

NEWTOWN (i.e. NEW TOWN) 9/6-54 - nearly
complete tying a two margin 4d Courier to small piece.

I have seen the town name on a Chalon before (and a couple of mss "46" too)
but this is a first on a Courier. Does anyone recall having seen an example before?

Those are fine examples of Torquay manuscript cancellations. I previously posted four other examples in MANUSCRIPT CANCELLATIONS - POST YOUR IMAGES HERE, two on Couriers and two on Chalons. They add up to a group with writing in different hands, so it would be worth putting them in the same place on the website for easy comparison. I'll leave that to the webmaster! The cancellations on the three Couriers appear to be in the same hand, but those on the Chalons are different.

This mss '46' of New Town was offered by Status International*
(Sydney) in their August 26th, 2010 auction (Lot 1949)

* I haven't included a link to the catalog listing as I don't think SI archive their past sales online.

Has anyone seen a "Kingston" manuscript before? Reported used "Brown's River" in Part One
of the "Green Books" but this is the first example I've seen.

Thanks to TPS BB member David McNamee for directing me to this example
of another manuscript cancel from KIngston.

This example was sold by Leski Auctions in their June 16th 2008 sale (Lot 866)
It realised AU$5500 against an estimate of $1500 but it was probably the large
multiple that attracted the dollars with the cancel being a nice "frill".
Here's the auction description and a link to the online catalog.

BRIDGEWATER
I bought the illustrated item on Ebay from a US supplier.
Bridgewater

The 4d Chalon appears to have a part manuscript cancellation of BRIDGEWATER. The date is incomplete, but it is likely to be in 1858. Remarkably, it appears to be in the same hand as the BURGESS cancellation shown opposite Page 108 of the Green Book, Part 1. Did they share a postmaster, either in parallel or sequentially?

While BN 47 for Oatlands in the First Allocation period is not rare this is an interesting item due to the preprinting paper fold and inverted watermark.

The following item is currently being offered on ebay as a postal manuscript of Runnymede. However, it is a postal manuscript of River Don, circa 1860. This is at least the second time the item has been offered as Runnymede. I notified the same vendor both times, but they chose not to amend the description. Just want to let everyone know the true situation. River Don is still a good manuscript, but don't get fooled to think it is Runnymede. UPDATE 7 OCT 2022: The vendor updated the ebay post to reflect the manuscript as River Don.

Hello,

I found this 1d chalon head wmk double lined 1 with a manuscript writing. Can anyone tell me if it might be a postal manuacript cancellation or if it us just a fiscal usage? Can anyone decipher the wording? Any help would be great!

Have had a good look at this and I am 99.5% sure it's simply a name, probably off a receipt. IT could be the name of a postmaster, making it postal. Almost 100% sure it's not a P.O name.

Can anyone tell me what the text is on this manuscript? I purchased this based on a low-resolution scan on eBay thinking it was dated 1860 and hoping it was postally used but it now appears to be 1864.

Here is a question to those more knowledgeable than myself on MSS cancellations prior to the issue of 2nd Allocation BNs.

Does the "River Don" mss also just have a "Don" mss, or does the "Don" image shown below represent a partial mss?

Thanks to Malcolm G and the images he has provided I can now state that the "Don" mss comes both as "River Don" and "Don".

The later mss is shown in the following images.
