FORGERY - Osterley South manuscript cancel on cover

#1 Post by Ross Ewington » Mon Sep 07, 2009 1:56 pm

This cover has recently surfaced in an auction consignment, the bulk of the material
having been purchased (20+ years ago) from a Tasmanian dealer on the N.W. Coast
who closed his shop in the 1980s.

It's a dud I'm afraid, recorded here in case it (or the stamp thereupon) re-surfaces
at some time in the future.

For the record, the light cachet applied and UL and twice on the reverse is that of the
Italian Consul in Launceston; the envelope has Chas. H. Smith & Co., Launceston
embossed on the flap; there is no evidence that the envelope was ever addressed;
the mss cancel and the endorsement in the LL corner do not appear to be in the
same hand.
