Roger,
I am virtually 100% certain that the post card was taken on 25 June 1904. It is so recorded on the photographers note book on that day. Real Photo cards hardly existed before about 1899 or so. How does this tally with other facts regarding the time ball ?

Re: The Hobart Time Ball: request for a picture
Looking through a recent find of R. C. Harvey real photo cards, this image of the Hobart Time Ball came to light. The image below is of S. S. Victory and shows Hobart Time Ball in the background. ss-victory.jpg Here is an enlarged section of the card showing that the time Ball is positioned to face t...

Re: Photographer, R.C.Harvey
I have just come across a collection of Harvey cards, as well as a collection of photographs. Some of the cards are already posted here, and interestingly, some would appear to be from the same photographic outing but a different view. There are a significant number of cards not yet posted. Also in ...

Re: Hobart Parcels Office cds on Pictorials
Colin, Thanks for posting your image. I have had a closer look at the 6d, and there is a stop after the " P" in the same location as yours although its small and not terribly obvious on the original- see enlargement below. Hobart-Parcel-office-P-closeup.jpg I have now posted my two partial strikes a...

Re: Burnie Code 8 1896 ?
Ross, thanks. I should have consulted the oracle before posting this and will do so in future. We should start a topic about codes at some stage. Although there have been some learned explanations I still find the use of codes a bit puzzling, especially something like '8' .

Hobart Parcels Office cds on Pictorials
The Hobart Parcels Office CDS is more often found on higher value stamps as I understand it. I have not been able to find a clear copy of this post mark until very recently. The few copies I have seen have been partial strikes. Can anyone confirm that the attached cds is in fact the Parcels Office, a...

Burnie Code 8 1896 ?
I recently came across this Burnie type 1 1896. It has the numeral "8" above the date line. Can anyone tell me if this is a code numeral ? I'm not aware of code numbers or letters on Burnie CDS.

Seal Rocks "Bass Straits" I've had this card for some time and never had much of an idea where Seal Rocks might be. I noticed on TV last night a photo of Seal Rocks, King Island. I have no idea if this is the same " Seal Rocks" . Can anyone comment? If King Island, then this should go on the list e...

Re: Introducing myself
Hi David, welcome to the TPS Bulletin Board. Tasman peninsula is indeed an interesting place with interesting postal history, particularly if you are interested in Convict mail ( although extremely scare and rather expensive I should add). You might find it interesting to seek out some postmarks. Ap...

Re: West Coast Postcard set with map and wallet
Mike, thanks for that. The comments on the back of your cards are certainly interesting and help to give a sense of how things were on the W Coast in 1928! I have just noticed a pencil notation on the back of my Pieman River View which reads " Taken out Wed May 29 1928 8:45 PM". hard to say what thi...

West Coast Postcard set with map and wallet
Here is an interesting set of 12 West Coast Cards in presentation wallet, including a map of the area showing roads and railway lines. Unfortunately there is no date or any details of the publisher or photographer. The words "Printed in England are the only clue. The map is useful in that it shows t...

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
I think the key to this one may be to identify the faint outline of the distant hill or mountain in the background on the skyline between the trees. I suspect its Mt Wellington, where the mountain rises steeply from the South, as seen from Hobart. Looking at your Lady Franklin photo, its seems not t...

Dave, by a remarkable coincidence I am in the process of formatting an article for the next Courier by Neil Russell, FRPSL, FBSAP on this very issue - the halfpenny on one penny surcharge. Without meaning to steal too much from the article, it would seem the item you display is indeed forgery accord...

Geoff, thanks very much. I possibly already have a few images from you I have not up-loaded( and I know I have up-loaded some ). I'm trying to get the original census stuff up then progressively add new examples. I'll get there in the end. I'm certainly not worrying about the 1913 date issue at this...

An additional Office has now been added to the on-line Census of 3R and 4R CDS on Pictorials, Legana, showing 7 examples. For the other Offices recently added, the following list shows the examples now recorded for each: Loira - 10 Murdunna -18 Teepookana - 4 Long Island - 7 Now that a lot of the te...

Ross Handstamp 1867
I noticed this hand stamp on eBay UK. Initially it did not appear to be a known (to me) postmark due to some distortion of the copy on my PC, but after advice from Ross Ewington and re-examination its the half-framed double arc type, which although scarce with the town name Ross, is nothing unusual....

Here are two more, Triabunna and SPrings. The Springs was of course a 'Summer" Post Office only. There are better images of this popular post card subject but this winter photograph appears to be one of the less often seem images.

Hi Charles, I can tell you that the Post Mistress from 1899 - 1912 was a Mrs Johnstone. The original post mar...

Tas Railway Parcel rates 1917
I have not seen a list of rates for Tas Railways parcells before. Graeme Vertigan, well-known ephemera collector has located this item, 1917, which sets out the parcel rates at the time of the first Garret issue. Does anyone have any further such information? Sorry, no mention of pigeons here. If an...

Carlton Post Office
Tracking down original Tasmanian Post Offices could become an interesting persuit and many have disapeared for ever. The Carlton Post Office is one of the easiest old Offices to find, located 30-40 kms from Hobart on the banks of the Carlton River. One of the earliest country POs, it opened on 9th N...
