Rates manual for railway parcels

#1 Post by bill » Wed Jan 08, 2025 10:11 am

This post refers to a manual issued from time to time by the Tasmanian Railways for
the convenience of the public. These manuals should be most helpful as it is useless
looking in Walch's Almanac, the Tasmanian Gazette and among the legislation for this
information as noted in the Craig & Ingles (1978) catalogue listing of railways stamps.

The two copies known to me (1902, 1907) have information on the special stamps to
denote payment of rates for conveyance of parcels and newspapers. These are the
parcel stamps (starting with Parcel Tickets, followed by Garratt types, etc) and the
newspaper stamps (starting with the seven small square labels ½d, 1d up to 6d for
bundles of newspapers of various weights, etc). They are listed in Craig & Ingles'
catalogue. The author made it clear that information was and still is very limited.
