T Perfin on the 5d QV "Tablet" - When Were These Produced?

#1 Post by Ross Ewington » Sat Jan 12, 2013 11:39 am

While describing these mint examples of the 5d QV "Tablet" both perf T (6x6) for my
next online auction a query came to mind..... when were these T perfins produced?

When the official 'T' puncture was introduced on November 1st, 1902 the 5d Pictorial
was the current stamp of that value in use and stocks must have been considerable.
(I have seen 5d Pictorials perf T with postmarks dating from 1902)

I believe that the perfin was only applied to the 5d Tablet when stocks of the 5d Pictorial
were exhausted ...say around 1908. To support this theory I need used examples with a
discernible date. Anytime between 1902 and 1914 will be useful.

If you have one or more, would you please post the details and/or an image in this topic?

P.S. I am quite happy to see my theory 'go down in flames'! :)

P.P.S. images of 5d Pictorials perf T used post 1908 would also be welcome here.

Hi Ross,

I'm doing a project with David Coath on State perfins and he asked me to look into this....I have about 15 5d Tablets, but the dates aren't stuckverywell. Here are the 3 that are best....I think they are oct 2x,1908 (could be1909 though, but the curve of the 9 doesn't match quite), Sep 10,1909 and Jan 14,1910. I'll do a single scan of the 1908/9 one againa bit closer up...

Image

I'll have a look at the pictorials later. Hope this helps a bit....

Just did a new scan - it's1909,I think,sadly. Sorry....

Just had a look - my latest 5d pictorial T' perfin was 1908,quite a few from 1903-7.... nor much help,I guess....

Are there any specific postmarks that would be of interest, also dates on other "T" perfins?(also on other values etc) - I have a load of all values in a stockbook here, courtesy of David, so please let me know if I can investigate other stuff for you.

Thanks Jerry ... no need to apologise ...1909 as an early date is fine.

Image of your latest 5d Perfin perf T would be useful for 'the record' (no need to use Photobucket by the way, the TPS BB allows you to upload images on to the site - see "Upload Attachment" tab below text box when making a post ........ I think images stored on the TPS BB load faster and are much 'safer' and permanent than using a third party image storage site)

Thanks for the offer Jerry but for this topic I'd like to just confine it to just late date 5d Pictorial perf T / early date 5d QV Key Plate perf T.

P.S. if you have any of the 5d QV perf T with punctures other than 6x6 holes, that would be definitely worth recording here.

The 'year' appears to be (19)10 .... can you please confirm as the year alone is still worth recording.

Thanks, Ross

Added Footnote: re your additional NO 29 10 cancel, what is the format of the puncture ...6x6, etc.

I can not add much to the discussion on dates but I have a tablet used in 1914 with a 6 x 7 perfin.
