My wife and I started coming to Australia from our home on the western side of the Gareloch in Scotland, when our son moved to Sydney. He is now an Australian citizen with a growing family and gave me a good excuse to expand my philatelic interests from a specialist collection of Newfoundland. Three visits to Tasmania started an interest in postmarks and letter cards which has been growing over five years and more. I guess the mountains and lochs of Scotland inspired a fascination with two islands that still have inaccessible areas and populations that have similar independence of spirit. My hill walking and sailing (with limited skill in a 1924 keelboat) activities go well with that too. My main professional interests are in the noise and vibration of ships and submarines. I'm also interested in the history of engineering, specialising in time balls.

Ebay and Tasmanian Stamp Auctions have provided a great marketplace, enabling me to interact with many of the leading experts and buy with confidence from them. My principal interests in Tasmanian philately are in the letter cards issued between 1898 and 1912, especially when used with interesting messages, and the postmarks up to 1912. I very much look forward to communicating with other members of the Society.
