Notes:
1) CDS = circular date stamp
2) Crown Seal = metal mold (usually oval in shape) used for applying wax seals to mail bags and official documents.
If inked, it can be used to provide negative impressions on paper i.e. lettering and crown in white, the rest 'solid'.
3) RR, RRRRR, etc. refers to the rarity rating of a particular postmark

Thanks Ross - that is very interesting! Especially the post office operating between 1856 and 1860. That was post convict period, and pre Bernacchi 'industrial' period. I need to check, but I think the island was leased by the Fletchers at that time, for farming. So, can you tell me, what would have been the requirements for a post office back then? I thought you would have had to have a certain number of residents.
Really appreciate your help (and finding this very interesting)
Kind regards,
Kathy
p.s. I forget to come back to this site to check for replies, and don't receive notification via email ... should I?
