Double print on 4d Chalons

#1 Post by songenaz » Wed Oct 29, 2014 6:53 am

Hi everybody.
Again a question for Tasmanian specialist
Has anyone information about double print for 4 d chalons?
It's not so esy to understand how it's possible to have such error.
Really, really rare on classic french stamps.
More than that can you explain a strip with stamps with double print and next without...
Usually if there's a double print I presume there's this error on all the sheet.
If anyone has some ideas.
Thanks
laurent

Hi Laurent

With early Tasmanian Chalon stamps, you need to be aware of the difference between "Double Impressions" (or Kiss Prints) and stamps that are Printed Double.

Even in the Courier series, the locally printed stamps from Tasmania can all be found with Double Impressions. This can be for a variety of reasons, however, generally it is the result of "slippage" of the paper during the printing process, with one strong print and another much weaker impression. In nearly all cases, the double impression creates a "blurry" stamp which leads many collectors to believe they are double prints. In all instances, the doubling is NOT complete across the whole stamp.....with the double impressions evident around the value tablet and the frames. The queens face is generally untouched. These "double impressions" can pass through two stamps, whilst the third stamp in say a strip of three is untouched.....because the paper slippage did not affect that particular unit.

Stamps that are "Printed Double" (a much better description and distinction than those that are "Double Prints", are much rarer and prized by collectors. Stanley Gibbons have removed all references to their catalogue for the stamps that are Printed Double.....since most dealers were trying to sell stamps with "Double Impressions" as the rarer type of error.

I have only come across less than ten Tasmanian Chalons where the stamp is "Printed Double". The scan of the three stamps illustrates the difference. The first two stamps are "Double Impressions". They may not show up all the clearly on the scan.....but they are only minor varieties, and readily found. The stamp on the right is totally different. It is "Printed Double".....with the second print 3.5mm to the right and 2mm above the original printing. This is an example of a stamp that has been through the printing press twice. The whole design including the queen's face have been printed twice.....and these are the rarities of the Tasmanian Chalon series.

I hope this answers your question....

Cheers

Gary

Am I right?
Looking in Tinsley's book, page 40, it appears that Purves wrote an article named "the problem of the "Double prints" in december 1975.
Do you know this article?
Maybe if you have it, is it possible to put on the board?
However, thanks a lot for your help

Hi Laurent

My scan of the three stamps has not loaded yet.....however, both your examples are Double Impressions. Even the second stamp does not show the characteristics of the stamp going through the printing press twice. When my three examples are loaded.....you will see the difference.....

As to Purves article in 1975.....I am not aware of it....but I will look it up in the Royal library when I an down there next. I wrote an article in Philately from Australia on these a couple of years ago....

Cheers

Hi Gary.
Thanks for your answer and the image!
As a french sentence say: "an image is better than thousand words"
It's more clear for me now.
If you can tell me where I can find your article on Double print or maybe send a link on the board, it will be great.
Again many thanks!
Laurent
