Has anyone heard of the Tasmania 1880 ½d Orange Sideface Perf 12 with no watermark? I have seen imperforate plate proofs overprinted SPECIMEN on very thin pelure type paper in a very crisp and clear printing. However, this looks blotchy, like the issued stamp......and I can find no record of a perforated plate proof....

Do you have a scan of this ½d stamp (first issued 1889 according to Basset Hull)?
I've seen a few copies of this stamp without watermark overprinted SPECIMEN.
This seems to be a special printing of the ½d stamp since the usual version was
simply awful to behold. Hence the special printing for SPECIMEN purposes.
Is it possible that your stamp is a case of the sheet being misplaced so that the
watermarks were badly out of alignment? I cannot think of any other explanation
at the moment.
