Re: BOOK: THE POST OFFICES & THEIR DATESTAMPS by J. HARDINGE - report updates here!
Here's a significant discovery just reported to me earlier today
....a THIRD example of the GRASSY KING ISLAND Type 4 cds
unfortunately, the date is indistinct however the 1½d brown KGV suggests that year is '20' supported by what can be seen in the dateline (above)
making this strike from the first period of use. Either way, the rarity rating of 5R is not affected!
Have you made any discoveries post-publication of John Hardinge's recent book?? ...please report them here but remember to include an image.

New sub-type of BRIDGEWATER Type 8aT(i) just discovered earlier today
This datestamp with a mixed size dateline ('month' in small letters) is Type 8a(m)T(i)
....I would imagine that since it's a fairly modern cds from a busy PO and has escaped 'discovery' until now, it would have to be rated 'R' at least

New late date for the ELIZABETH ST Type 7 cds (-7OC87) ..... previously thought to have been withdrawn when the post office was temporarily closed but this cover
indicates that the cds was retained at least for the re-opening of the office.

I try and concentrate on Tasmanian cds during the Pictorial period and you would think that all the variations would have been discovered over the past 100 years. However they are still to be found. While from a larger office this new code 7 (inverted) used with the Type 1(iv) "No Tasmania at Base" is a first. No code 7 is known with this canceller. Given that there is a code "L" poor eyesight of the postal officer concerned may have used the inverted "7" as an "L". If anyone else has one let me know. This has been "run past" John Hardinge who has confirmed it as a new code.

A new LRD for the Type U2 WYNYARD cds as backstamp on cover ...... Launceston b/s indicates that there was no dateline error
Previous LRD was 15 NOV 1881 so this is an 'advance' of well over a year!

Two partial strikes of Type R2(iii) SUPERINTENDENT OF MAILS · GENERAL POST OFFICE, HOBART datestamp ....until now only one example recorded
Top example in image dates 3 FEB 193_ ........ mostly likely to be 1937. Other example is dated 16 DEC 1936 which provides a new LRD if the other example isn't acceptable

Re: BOOK: THE POST OFFICES & THEIR DATESTAMPS by J. HARDINGE - report updates here!
Couple of new items for updates.
The first image is of a Birth Notice (birth on 14.8.1893) from Hollow Tree to Hamilton. Early use date for Hollow Tree was 12.3.1896. The Hollow Tree cds shown is 26 October 1893, the 2 is inverted. Both cds shown are under inked but definitely 1893 so this shaves a couple of years of the Early Use Date.
The Zeehan Type1(iii) cds Code "T" is not recorded as sideways. Attached is an image of the Code "T" sideways on both a 1d and 4d Pictorial. Both have the same date so it must have been a bad day for the postal officer concerned.

TARLETON can now be listed as known used in 1892.
This postal card just sold on eBay Ties the previously unrecorded date stamp to BN 139
The message on the card refers to a delivery of coal and the only business operating at Tarleton in 1892 was a coal mine

Another one bites the dust. A few more of those sort of ties and things may become much clearer.

Re: BOOK: THE POST OFFICES & THEIR DATESTAMPS by J. HARDINGE - report updates here!
I have posted a possible new Money Order and Savings Branch datestamp in the "Postmarks to 1912" section and cross refence it here as if new, it would be a new listing for Hardinge.
It reads "M.O.O.&S.B Tasmania" MR 26 1897.
Heres the link to the full post and images viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1376
