A CENSUS of TASMANIAN MACHINE CANCELLATIONS with SLOGANS

The collecting of Tasmanian machine cancellations has never been a very popular field with postmark collectors which I think is most unfortunate.

Although some very extensive and excellent research on machine cancellations (all Australian states + ACT & NT) has already been published by
R.C. Occleshaw in "Australian Slogan Cancellations - 1917-1988 / Volume I The Commemorative and Short Term Markings"
and "Australian Slogan Cancellations - 1917-1990 / Volume 2 The Definitive and Long Term Markings" (both published by Magpie Publications
in 1989 and 1991 respectively), there is no "Tasmania Only" listing yet available to collectors.

I believe that if such a list is compiled (with provisional rarity ratings where possible) it may awaken some interest in this fascinating field of Tasmanian postmark
collecting. Therefore, my intention is to conduct an illustrated census of Tasmanian machine cancellations in this forum leading to publication of a
listing at a future date in "The Courier" and on the Tasmanian Philatelic Society website.

I will keep a "working list" in this first post recording the post office, date of use, die type and slogan used. All information forthcoming from members
posts made below will be added to the list. (recommended image size is 100 or 150dpi). Suggestions for provisional rarity ratings are most welcome.

In order maintain some clarity with the "task at hand" I have opened three separate topics in this postmark category:

1) TASMANIAN MACHINE CANCELLATIONS with SLOGANS

2) TASMANIAN "PAID" MACHINE CANCELLATIONS with SLOGANS ~ LINK: http://tps.org.au/bb/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=192

3) TASMANIAN MACHINE CANCELLATIONS without SLOGANS (including "PAID" types) ~ LINK: http://tps.org.au/bb/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=194

Provisional rarity ratings are as follows: C = Common S = Scarce (uncommon but can be found with a little effort)
X = Rare (not often seen) and XX (rarely seen .... mainly due to a very limited usage; e.g. TRAVEL SEA ROAD TO TASMANIA used for 1 week in 1959)

[N.B. I have used the letter "X" rather "R" to denote rarity to order to avoid accidental comparison with the rarity ratings used for circular datestamps]

An extensive and outstanding article by Colin Salt on the various town name dies used in Tasmania was published in The Courier (No.45 / June 2008)
Any earlier or later dates than those provided by Colin posted below will be endorsed ERD (earliest recorded date) or LRD (latest recorded date).
Town name dies (a.k.a. "date cases") not previously seen will also be indicated with NPR (not previously recorded).

Jim Lessig and SAS/O published a monograph of Australian Commonwealth slogan postmarks 1918-1960 in 1974. Likely a lot of overlap with Magpie publications.

I have the Lessig monograph which is quite detailled about the slogans in use up to 1960 but it does not cover usage in individual offices (there are a new exceptions).

References to Tasmania are sparse but I will add the few dated examples from Tamanina to an update of the listing I have already provided.

A brief extract is illustrated below to show how the monograph is set out.

Martin Walker in Adelaide has reported that slogan cancels appear to have been removed from machine cancellers at various mainland mail centres and that it may have been the result from a directive from AP management. Apparently this change occurred in early October with now just the town/date die being present to cancel frankings.

Has anyone noted this change on mail being cancelled in Tasmanian mail centres? Please post any info and particularly images below.....
