REAL PHOTO CARDS by J.J.N. BARNETT

#1 Post by Ross Ewington » Fri May 13, 2011 9:06 am

J. Barnett is referred to by Chris Long in "Tasmanian Photographers 1840-1940" as
"(The) Doyen of Tasmanian press photographers" and many of his "news photos" made
it on to postcard.

Although the address stamped on the back of this card indicates that it was probably printed
between 1937 and 1959, the photo was actually taken at Elwick in 1932. The horse
is Second Wind (jockey W. Duncan) which one the King's Cup that year .... the next
King's Cup meeting in Tasmania wasn't until 1937 and was held at Launceston.

Photographs of photographers are very scarce because they were mostly on the 'wrong side' of a camera.

Although somewhat crumpled, this business card for J.J.N. Barnett features a portrait. Interesting to
see the 'connection' between Barnett and the WWI & WWII army camps in southern Tasmania stated
on the card.

Three real photo cards taken by Barnett at Claremont Army Camp WW1. The building is the Hospital. Notice that Barnett's address is Glenorchy. I guess he moved into Hobart later into his career.

I have checked my listings, and have but a single Barnett card, entitled "Aerial View of Hobart".

As to where it is stored..... Sorry!
