Real photo cards by J.C.Harrison are quite scarce. This example (postally used in 1913 with 1d Roo franking)
just arrived on my desk today. It is entitled "Eagle Hawk Neck Reflected"

Chris Long in "Tasmanian Photographers...." places Harrison at Eagle Hawk Neck in 1915 and at Havelock from 1916 to 1929
so this card predates the previously known period during which Harrison operated by at least two years.
A question arises about where Havelock actually is/was. In "Where in Tasmania", Colin Dennison states simply "Renamed Eagle Hawk
Neck". If this is actually the case, it was a long time before Harrison arrived as the Eagle Hawk Neck post office opened as a Receiving
House in 1875.
In E.R. Pretyman's "Index to Tasmanian Place Names" (digital version is available at http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/defau ... &id=NS2809
this is all the information available:

If this is correct (and Pretyman was a pretty good historian), it looks like the place name Havelock came after Eagle Hawk Neck and is/was not the same place.
There is a Havelock Road here

.....but still no village of Havelock is to be found.
Can anyone assist with this geographical puzzle?
But ..... and even more important still, if you have any other cards by or information about J.C. Harrison, can you please post it in this topic?

Re: REAL PHOTO CARDS by J.C. HARRISON, HAVELOCK TAS. PEN.
First Scan.
From Will to his Mother, written aboard HMASWarrega? Stoker, Hobart or elsewhere 6 - 1913. He writes " We are 4 miles away from Havelock so I went ashore for a walk 2 miles to a store, so we are leave tonight for Hobart to night again" etc.
It seems Will brought the postcard at the Havelock store and wrote on the postcard while steaming to Hobart.
Second Scan.
Will's postcard. J.C.Harrison real photo card.
Third Scan.
The back of another Harrison card, rubber stamped on back, "J.C.Harrison Store and Post Office Eagle Hawk Neck".
Forth Scan.
A printed view of Belleview Beach Hobart (not Harrison card) Card was written at Havelock to a Mrs Lovell, Hobart by ?? Interesting Havelock rubber stamping. Could this be a postal marking ? Stamp is postmarked Hobart 30/8/1910.
My conclusions! It seems Harrison's farm / store / post office / property was perhaps called Havelock. The name is alot easier to say and shorter than Eagle Hawk Neck. Perhaps it was a local name that Harrison was pushing, but unofficial.
Your ideas ???

Courtesy of a local historian and resident of Eaglehawk Neck we have photograph of the studio and store of local photographer J.C. Harrison. This building also served as the Eaglehawk Neck Post Office for some years
