TASMANIAN STEAM LOCOMOTIVES on POSTCARDS
Postcards with closeup photos of steam locomotives used in Tasmania are not overly abundant in my experience
This real photo card postally used in 1914 features a fine view of one of the two Beyer Peacock K Class Garratts used
on the Zeehan to Dundas 2' gauge tramway.

The correspondent wrote "this is a snap taken at the Monttana(sic) Mine of the engine at the concentrating plant, It
is a rather good picture as it was taken while the train was moving"

"This is Waratah Railway Station, not as good as yours. It is a dirty hole, they badly want a new one". No Photographers name, writing on back but no date.

I think that they are all Krauss locomotives.
I note that the engine 'plate' is fairly clear on the cabin of the left hand loco - would it be possible
to post a 1200dpi scan on that section of the photo? If we can read the number it may be possible to
'track' down the locomotive.....who knows, it may still be enjoying a happy retirement in a steam museum
somewhere!?!

The Campania Rail Disaster. Tasmanian Main Line 16th Feb 1916.
No photographers name. Cards are unused. Kodak backs.
Notice steam engine on its side in scan 1. It appears that these photos were taken not long after the accident as a distressed women can be seen in scan 3, also it appears people are still being rescued from carriages.
A soldier can be seen with a bandage around his head in scan 2. This train was carrying soldiers to the military camp at Brighton / Pontville.
No photographers name. Cards are unused. Kodak backs.

Series of 5 out of 6 Postcards missing number 2 of the same Train crash all with Military involved. I do not know if this is the same Crash that Mike has posted but these are different shots.

The "Zeehan Express". Postally used Zeehan 9/8/07. No photographers name. The building behind is the Imperial Hotel.One of many hotels in Zeehan at the time.

...and now for something completely different. A World War I era recruiting train (with camouflage) or suchlike on the steel bridge over the river at Waratah!

Unfortunately, the real photo postcard has been reduced a little.
The photographer is not identified but judging by the quality of the print, more likely than not, it was prolific "local" J. Robinson.

I wonder who this gentleman standing in front of the train was ..... the mayor? ....or the inventor of the "Driazabone" coat perhaps?

This small news item published in The Examiner (November 19th 1917) records a visit or the "Recruiting Train" to Burnie.

re post 7. http://tps.org.au/bb/viewtopic.php?p=2769#p2769 The three pictures shown of the Campania crash (15 Feb 1916) appeared in the "Tasmanian Mail" on 17 Feb 1916. Five photos appeared in that weekly, all credited as "Miss Varley. Enlargements from a 3A Folding Kodak". The locomotive was one of the TGR's recently introduced express M-class Garratt locomotives, built by Beyer Peacock & Co, England in 1912. It was hauling the south-bound "Hobart Express" with about 200 on board; the cause of the crash being due (probably) to speed - the loco riding up the outside rail on a curve, two miles north of Campania. Ultimately seven people died including the driver. (the speed might have been due to the driver trying to make up time due to the connecting boat from Melbourne being late into Launceston) One of the key features of a Garratt loco is the smooth riding, due to having an engine unit at each end - the boiler unit forming a tangent on the inside of any curve. This enabled much higher speeds on curvy track. The driver probably didn't realise his speed due to the smooth riding of the loco - passengers stories were somewhat different! Unfortunately the TGR's track and rolling stock was not really up to the task. A modern loco is fine but you also need to have modern rolling stock and good, well-maintained track with sufficient super-elevation on curves. On good track the M-class Garratts were tested by the TGR to around 60mph (100kmph) with no problems.

Both tps.org.au/bb/viewtopic.php?p=2844#p2844 AND tps.org.au/bb/viewtopic.php?p=2864#p2864 are of the Campania crash of Tuesday 15 Feb 1916. Both views appeared in the "Weekly Courier" 17 Feb 1916 credited to Beattie. A lot of the debris has been removed, a couple of relief locos are on scene with workers etc. The M-class Garratt was later repaired.

Post No.12 http://tps.org.au/bb/viewtopic.php?p=2865#p2865 with the military personnel. This is the Andover crash of 4 February 1910, when a north-bound troop train (from Hobart) train headed for the Ross military encampment left the rails. Injuries to persons were slight but a number of horses were killed. Speed does not seem to have been a cause as the train was on time at the time of the crash though it had left Hobart late.

Post No.1 http://tps.org.au/bb/viewtopic.php?p=2697#p2697 One of the 2ft-gauge K-class Garratts on the North-East Dundas Tramway under the Hercules ore bins at Williamsford. Loco in original condition, with paint lining evident, so probably 1910-1914 period. Note the empty (?) beer barrels on the ore heaped in the first truck. The K-class Garratts differed from all other later Garratts in having the cylinders inboard. Also note the compounding - the larger, low pressure cylinders closest to the camera and the smaller, high pressure cylinders under the driver's cab. Loco (or an amalgamation of K1 and K2) now in England (recently moved from Wales) under a second restoration, at the Statfold Barn Railway.
