WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
The Loongana card looks like the wharfs at Burnie and Round Hill is situated behind.
Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
Can anyone locate and name this West Coast Mine. Zeehan, Queenstown area?? Real photo, Kodak Austral back, unused.
Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
The card shown below is a recent purchase on EBay
I have managed to identify the following:
Commercial Bank of Tasmania Ltd. (on the corner)
Bank of Australasia (next door)
S. Newman (shop with Arcade)
Craw Bros. And Reed (on wall behind shop)
Carty Carpenters (building with white roof)
I have consulted my 1903 Wise's directory, but can only find one "S. Newman" - in Strahan. None of the other names are in the Alphabetic list or the Trades List (for the Carpenters).
Help please.

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
This is not a real WHEREIZIT query in regard the scene but where the photo was taken from.
This photo of Hobart and the floating bridge taken from the hill above Rose Bay/Lindisfarne has a message on the back dating from 1950.
Titled "Hobart from EUSTMSHIRE...", I have never heard of such a place. If it's a misspelling, what has been misspelt??

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
If they had been attempting to read my han writing it could simply be EASTERNSHORE?
Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
My guess is its a strange mis-spelling of "Eastern Shore"
Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
Can anyone identify this street and building. The one on the left has the name G.Hart Tattersall's. Two storey building on right has part of a name showing J.A. POT....

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
I can't see anything in the photograph that indicates that the scene is somewhere in Tasmania ..... that's just my opinion
from a Hobart-centric point of view.

Are you sure its in Tasmania? Is there anything helpful on the back?

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
Any ideas as to where and what was the occasion?
The important looking gentlemen are lined up with an old couple who are standing in the middle of the photograph. I guess this is the home of the couple. The 3rd person on the left appears to have a military uniform on. The Union Jack is to the right. Could it be the Wilson's at the Steppes? (Also the PO)

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
I'm sure its The Steppes.
Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
I have done a little more research and I think I have solved the questions I asked.
See "The Roof of Tasmania" A history of the Central Plateau, by Tim Jetson, page 70.
Yes, it is Mr and Mrs Wilson at their home (and PO) at the Steppes.
QED?
The only question now is, What was the occasion?

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
How about a local observation of Empire Day on May 24th (note no leaves on tree at left and warm clothing worn)?
Are there any details on the back that 'date' the card such as the card stock manufacturer or format of a 'stamp box'?

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
Does anyone know whereabouts these mine processing buildings were? - the card came with others featuring photos from the Queenstown-Zeehan-Tullah area.
Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
This is the Farrell Concentrating Mill (Tullah). This card is dated 1907. Could your picture be a later photograph of an updated and expanded mill? The bush behind the mill and the lay of the hill looks similar.
I have another real photo card of another unknown mill. Where is this one? I am sure it is on the West Coast. Unused, Kodak back.

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
I've put the two images together and sad to say I just cant see enough similarities between the two main buildings. Though the background does look quite similar again its not sufficiently clear that they are the same place?
Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
Can anyone identify this small settlement? Someone has written Lottah on the back, but I don't think it is. See other scan.
Card is unused, no photographers name. It certainly could be in the North East. What is the large two storied building?

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
Mike ...would you be able to post a considerable enlargement of just the two storey building and outhouses please?
Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
Here is an enlargement.
Could it be the back view of a tin concentrating building? At least 3 levels, appears to have a sloping roof on other side (see left side). A feed race or walk way on level 3 right side?
Ideas??

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
I received this real photo card of a "snow scene" as a large all-Tasmanian selection of cards (on Empire stock so it pre-dates 1915)
I can't place this as a Tasmanian view ..... any possibilities?

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
In case you missed it, this card has just sold on EBay for a tidy sum.
The text says "14 H.P. "Buffalo" engine owned by Mr. J.P. Power of Sorell, Tas. hauling gun and waggon weighing 9 1/2 tons out of soft cabbage patch en route to Mt. Nelson Battery".
The photo raises a lot more questions than it answers. Mainly, why is a 9 1/2 ton military gun being pulled along a track beside a cabbage patch? And is that the best way to get from Sorell to Mt. Nelson?

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
Cannot answer some of the questions but the road looks to be the 'main road' between Cambridge and Bellerive over Tunnel Hill, similar landscape and looking across to where the highway to the airport cuts through. There were orchards and presumably vegetables grown in the district.
This raises another question - how did they transport the gun across the Derwent? Presumably on the 'Kangaroo'?
Malcolm

Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
I have just driven along the old Tasman H'way (near Cambridge) where Malcolm suggests the scene may be located and yes, I think this likely to be the place. I tried to get a Google street view of the location but the modern roadworks are right in the way.
Re: WHEREIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING A VIEW HERE!!!
Can anyone identify this view of a frozen central highland lake. Is it Little Pine Lagoon ?
Real photo by Spurling. I think it is posted in 1908, to Spain.
