CARDS by CHAMBERLAIN'S NEWSAGENCY, ZEEHAN - A CENSUS
Posted: Mon Jun 23, 2014 8:08 pm
I have just received a small quantity of printed postcards published by "Chamberlain's News Agency, Zeehan..." which will be offered (soon) for sale by auction.
Chamberlain's was on the western side of the main street in Zeehan and fortunately, a nice view of the premises were featured on one of the cards received.
So far I have identified cards from what is most likely to be three different series (none of the cards bear a series index by the publisher or the printer)
The first type are not dissimilar to b&w cards by Spurling and Son from the period, each with the view inscribed near the top edge in a reddish-brown sans serif font.
The cards have slightly different settings of 'POST CARD' on the verso which suggests (but may not indicate) that the cards were not printed in the same batch.
So far I have recorded four cards of this type with two used examples both with 1910 postmarks.
The second type is a real photo style type* and is inscribed "Printed in Saxony"
The only example I have seen does not have a usage date
* looks like a real photo but has been printed using a non-photographic method of reproduction
The third type is also a real photo style type card but has been printed in England and is of the "picture frame" format. There is also
an attribution on the card to a photographer "Treanor". (A "J.Treanor" is listed by Chris Long as having business premises
is the main street of Zeehan between 1910 and 1914).
This card was used in January 1911
If you have any different cards published by Chamberlain's News Agency, please post them below and I will add them to the index
immediately below in this the first post. Please include the 'year' if used.
"Series A"
1. Pieman River
2. "Rough Seas" Trial Harbour
3. Zeehan Showing Catholic Church & Hospital
4. "Argent" Zeehan
"Series B"
1. Zeehan Showing Mount Zeehan
"Series C"
1. "Main Street, Zeehan"
I look forward to any contribution(s)
