Although best known for their advertising cards of Tasmanian Hotels, Boarding Establishments,
shopping emporia and so on, Niven also published a quantity of non-advertising view cards of various locations.

This card was sold in the Launceston Philatelic Society "Launpex 2009" postal auction for $140.

"Main St. Scottsdale"

If you have any images of other non-advertising cards by F.W. Niven, please post them here.

The other card scanned by Ross is also an unlisted Scottsdale Niven card.

"Views of Scottsdale A leading North Eastern Town, Tas".

This makes 8 cards known with views of Scottsdale.

You would think there must be more cards to been found for Launceston (2)and Devonport (2).

Mike, do you think that the multiview "A Leading North East Town ..." and the PO view
may actually be advertising cards (ordered say by the local council, chamber of commerce, etc
to promote the town) rather than "just" view cards (produced for general sale through newsagents, etc for tourism)

I note that the inscriptions on these two cards are like that found on Niven advertising cards whereas most
of the view cards I can recall have the more discrete style of text, "Main Street ...." etc.

Ross my theory is that these cards were indeed issued to promote Scottsdale and surrounds. There is no actual commerical advertising as such. So I think they could of been issued by the local Tourist Association, Council or Chamber of Commerce are all good possibilities. I am sure that they would of been available at the normal outlets in Scottsdale.

Another 2 Scottsdale cards and 2 Lauceston Cards

The Devonport cards

View 1 Devonport Wharf.
View 2 Mersey Bluff Devonport.
Each of these 2 cards has "A.W.Marshall, Photography, Stuart (sic) St. Devonport" printed on the left back side.

View 3 No Title. This is Uncle Leak's Teahouse and Museum, located at the Devonport Bluff. (I have confirmed this view with other non Niven cards and it is definitely Uncle Leak's Teahouse.) This card is unusual in that it does not fit the usual Niven style / design, also it is printed in black and white only.

This card is in my collection because of the early Launceston machine cancellation on the 'busines' side.

The message adds a flavour of the day - 'Dear P, This is a view of the pub where father is staying. Nice & clean & up to date, electic light & all. Lots of love Jim'
