An unloved cover found recently in a dealers stock reveals important information about the Riversdale post office just north of Swansea on the East coast.
The office is recorded as opening on 1 January 1873 and is believed to have been allocated breed numeral '78' previously used at Sandspit before that office closed. This cover bears the Postmasters mss endorsement of "Riversdale 25/12/1872" giving an earlier opening than previously believed. The numeral obliterator is unclear but is certainly only two digits. The opening date of Riversdale meant it would otherwise have received a numeral obliterator around 150 or 151.
The supporting fact that it is Riversdale is the purple rubber backstamp which belongs to Morris' Store situated in Swansea just a few kms. south of Riversdale.
