Agents-General for Tasmania

#1 Post by Jerry Weirich » Wed Nov 06, 2024 7:21 am

I purchased a cover that I think is from the Agents-General for Tasmania's office in London. It would be an early cover (dated 1887) for this office. It certainly appears Tasmanian, and it was mailed in London to London. Looking for others' thoughts and if anyone has other postal history from this Tasmanian Government office in London.

The position of Agents-General for Tasmania in London was established by the Agents-General Act (1885). It was a semi-diplomatic position, where the Government and Tasmanians were represented at official functions and the interests of the colony were promoted at various government as well as at trade and industry levels. The role changed somewhat after federation, but the position continued until 1981 when the Australian Government closed the office. (www.utas.edu.au/library/companion_to_ta ... eneral.htm)
