TASMANIAN ADVERTISING and ILLUSTRATED ENVELOPES
Posted: Mon Jan 25, 2010 2:01 pm
An area of considerable popularity among Tasmanian postal history specialists is that of collecting advertising and/or illustrated envelopes.
I hope that commencing a category devoted to advertising / illustrated envelope in this forum may be of interest to many users.
To keep this post and any discussion "on topic" I would like to define the two envelope types as follows:
Advertising envelope: a cover that in addition to a return postal address, also mentions products or service provided by the sender.
An advertising envelope may or not have an illustration on the front or reverse.
Illustrated envelope: a cover which has one or more illustrations on the front and/or reverse that are not advertising as such, e.g. a picture
of the sender's premises, a coat-of-arms, a flag, etc.
I do not regard a printed return address alone (or "corner card" as some call it) to be sufficient to classify an item as an "advertising cover."
Naturally, my definitions are open for discussion and any dialog on this is welcome in addition to lots of posts with images.
My first contribution:

This envelope almost qualifies for both categories as it is illustrated and mentions what the sender sells, i.e. "Dairy & Produce Merchants".
If making a "one or the other" decision, I would classify it as an "illustrated envelope"
P.S. the Murdoch Bros building still exists in Collins Street and is currently the Hobart outlet for "Country Road" clothing.
