TRANSMISSION of TINSELLED POST CARDS PROHIBITED

The transmission of tinselled postcards was prohibited from January 13, 1908.

This postcard addressed to J. Walch & Sons was mailed at Woodsdale on FE 1 08
and endorsed "Transmission of Tinselled Post Cards Prohibited" in red ink, most likely
at the Hobart GPO, and then directed to the DLO.

I have only ever seen this instruction applied by rubber stamp in red on such mail before.

In "Tasmania - The Informative and Instructional Markings" by Dr. P.G.R. Reid FRPSL (2008), he
records the earliest usage of the relevant instructional handstamp as being 3/02/1908 .... the
day after this postcard would have arrived at the Hobart GPO!!

Does anyone have an image or know of other examples of this instructional marking
applied in manuscript?

Have had two of the handstamp but have never seen it in mss

I have seen one other example of this instructional marking in manuscript. I discovered it in a $5 box at Gary Watson's in 1987. Unfortunately I cannot recall the addressee or origin.


It was in red ink and a few days before the handstamp was introduced. Do not have an image unfortunately.
