1899 cancels on Pictorials

#1 Post by Harper123 » Tue Jun 11, 2024 3:06 pm

How rare are 1899 cancels on pictorial stamps? I've got a Launceston Type 1c(i) that's dated December 30th 1899, but I haven't seen a lot of other pictorials dated in 1899.

Harper123,
They are quite collectable and sought after. You can pick them up still from mixed lots if you are vigilant.
I would not say they are rare by any means but I'd hazard a guess and say about 1R.

Thank you. I've also noticed that a lot of dealers pay attention to the city, but not to the dates. That's how I picked up mine.

1899 dates after December 25th on Hobart and Launceston postmarks can be found with a little effort. Postmarks pre-dating December 25th are much scarcer in my experience.

All 1899 dated postmarks from post offices other than Hobart and Launceston are very scarce to extremely rare.

The one I have is from Launceston and is dated December 30, with an A code. I also have a Launceston postmark with no date at al, just blank in the middle.
