Hi John
Not a Tasmanian postmark. It’s not unusual to see a Tas stamp cancelled elsewhere. Could be another State or New Zealand

Hi John,

It's a Sydney cds. Unfortunately Sydney cds on Tasmanian Pictorials are one of the more common mainland strikes apart from Melbourne. There is a plethora of Sydney cds types and are a field of their own.

I have attached a scan of a few of the different ones in my collection. There are different styles, codes etc etc.

The interstate use of Tas stamps is quite interesting as it was not legal for Australian Colonial stamps to be interchangeable until 1910,13 October.
Any out-of-State stamp postmarked before 13 Oct 1910 was not strictly valid for postal use.

This was because of the "Tattersall" factor and the continued separation of State postal revenue until the end of 1912. This situation was changed in 1910 to allow stamps from any State to be valid in any other State. There is a long and interesting story behind this which has been documented by Richard Breckon. If anyone is interested I have a copy of the article.
There should in theory be covers stamped with stamps from outside the state of posting which have been taxed as unpaid mail though I have never seen one.

Pete
