I just acquired a cover from the Barwis sale in New York that appears to be a new type of the GPO Hobart Town marking. The marking is 34 mm in diameter and fits the description of the type 3 marking (Green book, part I, figure 9, pages 10-11). This example is without the VDL inscription which is mentioned in the next book (Green book, part II, page 13, listed as 9b). So far, so good. However, this example only has the day of the year shown one time. In all other examples of this marking that I have seen, the day is always shown twice--once on each side of the month. In those other examples the month is always centered under the crown. In my example the month is off center indicating to me that it is not a case where the second day just doesn't show/print.
Has anyone seen a similar marking with only a single day in the date? Would be nice to have another variety.
New Type? GPO Hobart Marking
