Administration Note: Following discussion with the author of this excellent and most useful listing, we have decided to transfer it to the
Tasmanian Philatelic Society website (http://tps.org.au) so that the original format of the document (enabling a much easier interpretation) can be retained.

A small part of the text has been left below to whet the collector's appetite. The entire document is now available on the TPS website
and may be viewed via this link: http://tps.org.au/PDFs/second%20allocat ... rdinge.pdf

I have attached a list of Second Allocation Barred Numerals and their probable office of allocation on a year by year basis. Some of the colours and bold
type in my original document do not show so have made the following alterations:

1) Where a number has a star next to it it indicates that it has not actually been seen tied but there is good reason to indicate that this is the office of allocation.

2) Where a number has two stars next to it this is a purely speculative allocation

If anyone has any information that adds to this list in any way I would appreciate knowing about it. In the meantime feel free submit any issues, information and questions.

1861 Opened 1861 Period Open
White Hills 14/01/1861 - 31/12/1863

At this point (about Feb 1861) there was a second allocation of numerals. None of the first allocation were retained in use at this time. The new issue was in alphabetical order, excluding Hobart Town, which no longer used a numeral handstamp obliterator. Only New Town and New Norfolk and Broadmarsh Upper and Broadmarsh Lower (reversed order) are not in strict alphabetical sequence. Every office then open was allocated a number, although the number was not actually issued unless or until the office was or became above a mere RH in status. The offices open and numerals allocated were as follows:

1 Antill Ponds
2 Avoca
3 Bicheno MRH; P.O from 1/11/1870

In Reference to John Hardinge's estimate of the Second Allocation "about Feb 1861," I think I can improve on that estimate. I have a manuscript Oyster Cove 2 MAR 1861 on pair (ex-Askeland), which was a Saturday -- one presumes that if a new handstamp was available, it would have been used. I have a local drop letter posted at Launceston 6 MAR 1861 (Wednesday) with a fine BN52 Second Allocation numeral postmark. Therefore, I propose that the date of the Second Allocation was effective approximately Monday 4 March 1861. Scans of both items are available.

Thanks David. That is great to know. Closes up the gaps nicely.

Kudos to Mr. Hardinge for the updated list of Second Allocation Barred Numerals. This area is clearly NOT my expertise but I noticed that the list states two types of the Launceston numeral 52. I have for sometime been sorting my 52's by three types so I was wondering if I have a new type. The scans below are my "master reference" copies that I use to distinguish between the types. The first scan shows a type that is easy to distinguish with the straight vertical serif on the 2 and the thin flag on the 5. The second scan shows the slanted serif on the 2, even thickness in the base of the 2, and uniform thick and angular flag on the 5. The third scan also has the slanted serif on the 2, but the base of the 2 is thicker near the serif and the flag on the 5 is curved at top and bottom. I don't think the second and third cancels are the same. The quality of these strikes are very good and I have multiple copies of each (and I have lots of 52's!). Any thoughts on two vs three types of BN 52?? Thanks, Jerry
