2ND ALLOCATION NUMERALS - A REQUEST FOR QUALITY IMAGES
Posted: Tue Mar 09, 2010 6:44 pm
by Malcolm Groom
This is a request for all Bulletin Board members and visitors to this Board to supply quality images of 2nd Allocation Barred Numerals on cover or stamps to use to illustrate a listing of these obliterators.
I am also seeking examples of the unframed, double arc and circular date stamps introduced from the late 1860's for inclusion in the same listing.
All contributions will be acknowledged.

Here's a couple to get started ... I think these are both of the quality that may be required
for this project.

BN364 used at ELLIOTT rated RRRR .... this is the only example that I have seen on QV S/F issue !!
Randall Askeland's listings from about 10 years ago only record BN364 as being seen on Pictorial issues.
While not quite as exciting rarity-wise as BN364, here's a bold strike of BN369 used at RIANA and
rated RR.

My attachment a scan of the back of a postal stationery card from Ulverstone to an address in Penguin.
I post it as it is an early example of the PENGUIN CREEK framed c.d.s dated 14.12.96 which I think is quite early.
The strike is poor - date nearly illegible and I have darkenen the card to show it more clearly.

Although the publication of John Hardinge's updated listing of Second Allocation Barred Numeral cancels has been completed (in The Courier Nos 49, 50 & 51) we still require quality images of cancels - no limit as to the quantity. These will then be used to develop the "Index of Tasmanian Post Offices & Postal Markings" currently under construction at the TPS website.
Here is a nice example of BN246 (used at Clarke's Island and Long Island)

It was sold on eBay during December 2011 for a rather healthy AU$209.49

Hi Malcolm, here are some Arcs and Unframeds as requested. All are taken from Letter bills. Some are good examples but others have printing from the letter bill within the image.
Please let me know which of these are suitable - I have quite a few early CDS on bills and will upload any that are useful. Also, are you looking particularly for early strikes of pre-1900 CDSs?

BN246 tied with a partial strike of the ultra rare
CLARKES ISLAND datestamp!

As you can see by the name of my image file, I originally thought that the cds was LONG ISLAND however the 'L' and the 'N'
in 'ISLAND' on that datestamp are quite different - see
