TASMANIAN ADVERTISING and ILLUSTRATED ENVELOPES
An area of considerable popularity among Tasmanian postal history specialists is that of collecting advertising and/or illustrated envelopes.
I hope that commencing a category devoted to advertising / illustrated envelope in this forum may be of interest to many users.
To keep this post and any discussion "on topic" I would like to define the two envelope types as follows:
Advertising envelope: a cover that in addition to a return postal address, also mentions products or service provided by the sender.
An advertising envelope may or not have an illustration on the front or reverse.
Illustrated envelope: a cover which has one or more illustrations on the front and/or reverse that are not advertising as such, e.g. a picture
of the sender's premises, a coat-of-arms, a flag, etc.
I do not regard a printed return address alone (or "corner card" as some call it) to be sufficient to classify an item as an "advertising cover."
Naturally, my definitions are open for discussion and any dialog on this is welcome in addition to lots of posts with images.
My first contribution:

This envelope almost qualifies for both categories as it is illustrated and mentions what the sender sells, i.e. "Dairy & Produce Merchants".
If making a "one or the other" decision, I would classify it as an "illustrated envelope"
P.S. the Murdoch Bros building still exists in Collins Street and is currently the Hobart outlet for "Country Road" clothing.

Here's an illustrated advertising cover from more recent times...

Note the scarce commemorative slogan cancel.
...and an early advertising cover from Birchall's (a significant producer of advertising stationery
for many decades.

Re: TASMANIAN ADVERTISING and ILLUSTRATED ENVELOPES
The J.S. Scarr cover from Launceston is intact and some work on it by a paper conservator
would be money well spent in my opinion.

H.K. Fysh and Co. This cover bears a Hobarat postmark but carries no return address. Were Fysh and Co a Tasmanian Company?

Re: TASMANIAN ADVERTISING and ILLUSTRATED ENVELOPES
Although I have not seen this envelope before and cannot find any reference online to the firm H.K. Fysh,
I am certain that the company was based in Tasmania as the surname "Fysh" is very significant in
Tasmanian history ...... Sir Wilmot Hudson Fysh (born in Launceston) was one of the founders of
QANTAS and Sir Phillip Oakley Fysh was twice Premier of Tasmania and the Australian Postmaster General
during 1903/04 ......... also, there is a photo of a Mrs. Harry K. Fysh as a pass holder to the Tasmanian
International Exhibition of 1894/95 held by the State Library of Tasmania.
If I find anything about H.K. Fysh I shall report back!

Re: TASMANIAN ADVERTISING and ILLUSTRATED ENVELOPES
I'm cleaning out images from my computer and came across this cover. The cover is not in my collection (I think) and I'm not sure where it came from but thought I would share it. I was attracted to the postmark without the zero in the year.

This one shows a corner card for Field & Hart of Laumceston.

Re: TASMANIAN ADVERTISING and ILLUSTRATED ENVELOPES
It's been a while since anyone recorded one or more advertising on illustrated envelopes in this topic.
Here's a couple acquired recently...
BRISBANE HOTEL, LAUNCESTON (1908) - there must be others from this prominent establishment ...do you have one?

LOYAL MACQUARIE LODGE No.7131 STRAHAN (1910) - are there any from other Manchester Unity Lodges in Tasmania?
