Burnie Code 8 1896 ?

#1 Post by Peter Allan » Wed Jun 09, 2010 8:23 pm

I recently came across this Burnie type 1 1896. It has the numeral "8" above the date line. Can anyone tell me if this is a code numeral ? I'm not aware of code numbers or letters on Burnie CDS.

John Hardinge has listed this ...

I wonder if there's any connection between the use of Code '8" at Burnie and also at Waratah
at approx. the same time?

Ross, thanks. I should have consulted the oracle before posting this and will do so in future. We should start a topic about codes at some stage. Although there have been some learned explanations I still find the use of codes a bit puzzling, especially something like '8' .

Yes, Castle Forbes Bay is an interesting one. It is probably significant that all of these CDS were made at the same time-late 1881/early 1882.
