This very fine imperf block of 4x 9d QV Sideface in dull violet is printed on thin unwatermarked paper.
particular plate proof was produced in Tasmania whereas those on Crown/CC watermarked paper were
produced by De La Rue before the printing plates were despatched.
Comparing the high quality of printing evident (similar to those made on watermarked paper) and the first
issue of 1870 which was a much poorer production, is it possible that these items were produced by De La
Rue as well and not in Tasmania as purported?
Any information, opinions or comments are welcome.
Tinsley states (on page 68 of "Tasmania - Stamps and Postal History") that it is believed that this9d dull violet QV SIdeface imperf block x4 - any info?

In Basset Hull, we read in Chapter XVII (Proofs and Essays) that
De La Rue sent out various proof impressions with their plates
of 1870 and 1871. Basset Hull said that these proofs are printed
in De Le Rue's finished style on glazed unwatermarked paper and
are imperforate. (Page 114)
He mentions proof impressions on page 64 but does not give any
details. He does not record any examples on Crown CC paper for
reasons that I have yet to find out.
He said that these proof impressions are of very fine impression
compared with the locally printed stamps.

Ross's scanned example of a block of four 9d looks
as though it is printed in magenta, not dull violet.
