Early Tasmanian Post Cards Pre 1902
Early Tasmanian Post Cards Pre 1902
Tasmanian Picture Postcards before 1902 are scarce, before 1901 are rare and before 1900 very rare. I thought it would be interesting to start a register of early dated Tasmanian postcards. Please add your scans if you have an early card. My earliest card is dated August 14th 1899. It was posted from Launceston to France. The card was printed by the Examiner Launceston.

Re: Early Tasmanian Post Cards Pre 1902
Postcard posted 15/1/00 to Bristol England. 1d 1/2 rate. 1d De La Rue pictorial.
According to Lancaster page 13, the earliest know cancellation for 1d Mount wellington is 13/12/99. This postcard is dated only 33 days after that early date. This is the earliest date I have seen with a pictorial on a postcard. Do you have an earlier date??

Re: Early Tasmanian Post Cards Pre 1902
re Mike's card above....
I just noticed another example of this card (same photo) used in 1902 in a poor condition offered on eBay

It's the same photo but a little reduced. The publisher (J.Walch & Son) is inscribed down the edge
of this card so I am fairly confident in assuming that Mike's card was from the same source.

Re: Early Tasmanian Post Cards Pre 1902
A French card? Posted from Sydney 14/11/99 to Germany. View is "Digger from Maestri Tasmanie" This is a very early view of one of the Maestri mines at Dundas. Wilberton Tilley's book "The Wild West of Tasmanian" published by Evershed Bros of Zeehan and Dundas 1891 lists 3 Maestri mines,
Maestri's Broken Hill, Maestri No1 and Maestri No2 .
This card should exist postally used from Tasmania. Keep a look out !
