This postcard size photo by A.W. Marshall of Devonport

has a printed back which I am uncertain as to whether or not I have
seen it before ....

It appears to have printed on to photographic stock rather than
'handstamped'.
These questions come to mind to which responses are solicited from
BB members.
1) do you think the photo was intended to be used as a postcard (looks like a duck, walks
like a duck, quacks like ....etc.)?
2) does anyone have examples of similar 'cards' that have been postally used?
3) if the back of the photo has the text and illustration printed thereupon,
was there an Australian manufacturer of photographic stock who provided
this service?

Re: REAL PHOTO CARDS by A.W. MARSHALL, DEVONPORT ...
Hello Ross
The answers to 2 of your questions,
Q. 1 and 2. Yes. See scan. Postally used from Launceston to France. See back side top right hand corner, the word "over" indicating stamps are on the picture side of the card. One stamp is missing (1d?) either fallen off or removed. Unable to date but I would say about 1914. Any ideas? This printed (and attractive) back seems to be the rarest of AW Marshall's postcards. I only have a handful. I think this is the only postally used copy I have.
Q.3 No idea.

Re: REAL PHOTO CARDS by A.W. MARSHALL, DEVONPORT ...
thanks very much Mike and what a terrific view on the card too!
Judging by the franking, it's probably been mailed a little later than 1914 however I think that the photo itself dates from before WWI (total lack of mechanised transport in Formby Road).
Locality has changed a lot in the last 100 years or so but the pub is still there!
