WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS HERE!
Does anyone know who the publisher was of this postcard (used in 1904)?
Does anyone have another postcards from this series?
Does anyone have another postcards from this series?
Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS HERE!
I have no idea who the publisher was, but I can add 3 more cards to the series.

Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS HERE!
thanks Mike ..... three more scenes of the Devonport area(!!) ... looks like we may have
a possible locale for the photographer/publisher. If anyone else have some similar cards,
hopefully they can post them here.
The writing on the photographs is quite distinctive - when I get some time I'll search some
contemporary photos of the Devonport area to see if I can find a "match" that identifies
the photographer.

UNIDENTIFIED SERIES of HOBART COLOUR POSTCARDS c.1940
I purchased these cards a few weeks ago on eBay as I had not seen them before.

The cards were used from Adelaide in 1941. Both appears top have been sold in a booklet as there
are signs of separation down the left side of both items.
Here is an image of the reverse ...unfortunately, the publisher is not identified.

Does anyone have any more of these cards in their collection .... any ideas as to who published them?

Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS HERE!
I may have other cards in the series that Ross asked about. The perforated edge was the clue. However, the reason for this post is to seek help in identifying photographer/publisher of the two cards of the Burnie area illustrated below. I have also just bought (on EBay) a different view of West Beach by the same photographer.
I may have others in this series - I have not had time to look.
Both cards are RP on Kodak paper. The Kodak imprint has a fleur de lys with an extended downstroke in each corner.I may have others in this series - I have not had time to look.

Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS HERE!
I saw those cards when they were offered for sale .... I have never seen the view (with South Burnie cemetery in the foreground) before. The other view intrigues me as it is inscribed 'West Beach' (and I grew up about 100m from that very beach) and cannot 'place' the scene! I will investigate further.
As to the photographer I guess the 'first accused' would have to be Ernest Winter! If any BB members have one or more cards that are definitely by Winter or 'Tasma Studios' perhaps they could post the inscription(s) from the cards in this thread.

Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS HERE!
Yes, I agree with you Ross, both photos are by Ernest Winter. The captions are in the same style handwriting of my Winter cards. Winter took many photographs around the beach and harbour area of Burnie. The West Beach Card c1920 (before your time Ross) has the Basalt columns (rock) which did exist at eastern end of West Beach before the many port redevelopments. This area is now covered by concrete!. Some of the Basalt columns can still be seen across the road next to the unit development. I think they might have some protection order on them.
Mike.

Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS HERE!
Thank Mike. I have just been to Burnie today and can report that you are correct. The view is at the eastern end of West Beach looking towards Blackman Reef ... the post with the inverted triangle would be a shipping navigation aid and yes, it would all be under concrete now where they stack shipping containers.
cheers .. Ross
P.S. I parked my car in front of the remaining basalt columns.

Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS HERE!
I have been a little busy just lately, but had managed to find a card with the same style of handwritten inscription that has an embossed inscription 'Ernest Winter, Tasma Studios, Burnie' in the bottom left hand corner. It is not obvious and is only clear when the light is at a certain angle! So I agree with you all. Thanks for the additional historical information.
Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS H
Reverting to Ross's enquiry about the cards with a perforated separation, I can offer a further example from the same series, showing the "View from the Second Lookout, Mt Wellington, over Hobart". Still no clue about the publisher!

Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS
This portrait of a couple of Thespians from Hobart pre-dates 1914 (Kodak Austral stamp box has 'dots' in the corners)

The photographer has sort of indentified himself by means of a rubber handstamp on the back which I can't quite decipher

Any ideas as to who (the photographer that is) it may have been?

Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS H
All cards signed RJ. All appear to be hand tinted, empire backs, and very good quality.
Long lists R F Johnston - Devonport pharmacist c 1906, photographic supplier with a darkroom. Perhaps ?????
Can add the following cards
19. Cataract Gorge. (view of pathway and shelter) Postally used 3/9/08 Launceston. I have 2 of this view, the tinted colours are slightly different.
20. Launceston from Trevallyn.
21. SS Loongana outward Bound.
22. Cataract Gorge Launceston. (view of pathway and river)
23. Electric Power House Launceston.
24. Corra Lynn Launceston.

Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS H
Although this card was used in 1965, the FX Holden indicates an earlier publication date.

Questions:
1) the card is numbered 'L 25' which suggests that it may be from a series of views. Does
anyone have any other examples that they can post here?
2) does anyone know who the publisher of this was ?? ..... the card has 'RR' handstamped at centre/base
on the message side.

3) the printer of the card is given as 'Brown Print · Armidale NSW'. Have you seen any other cards
with this little logo printed thereupon? Did they print cards for any other publishers?

Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS H
This 'Gum Leaf Series' card with a picture of Cataract Gorge plus 'Dinna Forget', etc. was postally used
from Strahan to Hobart in 1909. On the reverse is printed 'F & J' (possible 'F & I') with nothing else to identify the publisher.
Does anyone know who the publisher was?
Are there any other cards from the same series with other Tasmanian views?

I have just found an example of card No.24 (Corra Lynn, Launceston) which I have added at the bottom of Mike's post (scroll up)
As all the cards recorded to date are from the Launceston area so I think R.F. Johnston may be a 'long shot' at this stage.
Can anyone list or (preferably) post examples here of cards by 'R.J.' which are not of scenes in the Launceston area?

Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS H
Can anyone tell me who produced this card with a view of Charles Street, Launceston featuring "Grattan's Post Card Depot" in the foreground?
There is a photo index number in the LL corner "A48627" .... I am reluctant to assume that the card was printed by Grattan because if I do, I'll
probably be wrong!

White's Series · Verrell photos - assistance required
Can knowledgeable collectors help me with the publisher of this card?
On the back it says "White Series", E. Verrell photo.
Is "White Series" published by Mr. White? Or is it a colour coded series like "Blue Series" or "Green Series" published by Verrell? Des Beechey

Re: WHOIZIT? SEEK ASSISTANCE WITH PUBLISHERS/PHOTOGRAPHERS H
There are no details of the publisher on this card, but I assume the anchor between "POST" and "CARD" makes it distinctive. Who was the publisher?
Many thanks

It actually says "White's Series" so I think it is definitely the name of the publisher rather than an absence of colour!Des_Beechey wrote:Can knowledgeable collectors help me with the publisher of this card? On the back it says "White Series", E. Verrell photo.

I am not certain which White produced these cards ...extremely unlikely to be connected to well-known Queenstown photographer and postcard publisher
E.M. White though.

Can an expert tell me who published these cards with dark brown borders? And how many are there?
Thanks

The White's Series is not, I think EM White of Queenstown, but the publisher of pictures by E Verrell. Below is the list of his cards that I have, and all but one credit the photo to E Verrell. The Strahan card is framed, so the photographer's name may well be obscured by the frame.

Can anyone tell me the publisher of this card? It has small M&L (McVilly & Little) initials on the front below the title, but on the back there is an elaborate H&B logo.

"H&B" = "Harding & Billing".
I wonder what the deal was between "M&L" and "H&B"? I can't recall having seen this "connection" before.
Does anyone have any other cards like this by Harding & Billing?
