6d dull lilac imperf on large star wmk

#1 Post by Revenuer » Thu Apr 07, 2011 7:46 pm

In a recent arrival of a Tasmania collection there was 2 x 6d dull lilac, imperf, on large star wmk.

Call me a dreamer but apart from the obvious forgery aspect does anybody know if the 6d on large star mentioned in notes in SG below sg18 actually had CANCELLED on them or were they released mint?

Maybe these two I have had a forged star applied on marginal copies??? Any takers.

Dave

The 6d Chalon on Large Star wmk was never released for postal use. A full sheet of the stamps was run off as a proof sheet, which was misfiled in a desk drawer, or so the story goes. The sheet was found some years later crumpled up at the back of the file drawer. All examples are unused, and most examples are creased. The Jaffe book says the 6d Perkins Bacon Barred CANCELLED stamps are on 6d paper.

Thanks David

So i have either a wmk forgery or a genuine copy.

Do you or does anybody have a 6d on star wmk which can be loaded up to compare colour etc.

Provenance of the above copy came from the Dr. James Kyle C.B.E., F.R.C.S., F.R.P.S Collection.

Talking with several specialists of Tasmania and by private communication of the specialists on this board the star wmk copies I have would appear genuine. Can others provide scans of other known copies please. Dave

Well done Dave and did I read right that there were two of them included in the collection (buy one, get one free?) ? :P

Someone may have 'logged' any sales of other examples of this stamp so there may be catalog and website photos out there somewhere
that may be 'procured' for this topic.

Yes Ross there is two.

I never put the other one up at it is a bit grubby and needs a bath but having another re look at them they appear to fit together as a rejoined pair.

Think this now adds to them, they will look good on a page!

I have scanned and brightened them up for a better look.

OK i am talking to myself here now, i decided to scan the back to show the board and now notice a central hinge, so some dill has cut them into singles and kept them together.

Ross Re buy one get one free, i got both free as they were undescribed in the lot from Cavindish the same lot i brought the SG1 reprint sheet in i have shown on another thread.

Of interest a copy has surfaced on Status May 2011 sale http://www.statusint.com/result.php?id=59 with the following description: 1858-60 QV Chalon 6d dull lilac UNISSUED wmk large star. UN, creased etc as always, as these were found many years later crushed & crumpled at the back of a safe drawer. See footnote after SG 18, cat £750+. (P)

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but I had been reading this the other day, then I was looking at EBay last night and look what turned up!
