Photo 'stamps' on a 'Do It Yourself' postcard

#1 Post by Ross Ewington » Thu May 19, 2011 12:55 pm

This particular card appears to be a 'do-it-yourself' type ..... I assume that one
of the real photo view 'stamps' was meant to be placed in the printed frame.

Unfortunately, I do not have an image of the other side but I imagine that this card has an undivided back.

Can anyone 'shed some light' on this card and/or post an image of another example or two?

Think I can help you out here Ross. The "stick on photo card" was produced by the Star Studio, Eastern Market, Melbourne. This card was posted on 23 May 1905 to Launceston. It seems like the 2 males were from Launceston and on holiday in Melbourne. So this card has a Tasmanian connection.

The photos on your scan Ross are actually stick on type perforated stamps from ( I think) a sheet of 12. They were produced by Spurling & Son Launceston and printed in Prussia. Notice that these stamps are all views which occur on Spurling postcards. My "stamps" are all separated but I have arranged them as per the sheet was printed. Nearly all the outside stamps have selvage which has helped me work out the positions of the stamps within the sheet.

thanks Mike, that's most interesting

Am I right in assuming that the 'stamps' were printed (rather than being real photo prints) and have gum on the back?

P.S. great 'plating' job! :)

Yes, these Spurling cinderella stamps are printed and have gum on the back.
