I recently stumbled across this published letter to the editor of The Mercury regarding the Pictorial stamps ....

Now we can search digitised copies of Tasmanian newspapers using TROVE http://trove.nla.gov.au/
see if you can find some contemporary views about the stamp issue (there were many I believe) and post them here!

Here are some letters to the editor and a report in The Mercury, all from late December 1899 ... just after the 1d and 2d values were issued.
