I assume this is a private Stamp Duty canceller ?
Does anyone know what B. A. might stand for ?

Ross, thanks.
Any thoughts about the "88" The actual date seems to be 93... but I cold be wrong.

Pete

PS here is the Bank in Question. Photo, Baily presumably of Postcard fame and the location is Macquarie St, Hobart. The building on the Right has signage saying "Bank of Australasia"

.....maybe it was a teller's number, the branch number or just the number of the datestamp.

I have seen a fair number of Revenue stamps and have not seen this canceller, or part thereof, before. I would concur with the suggestion that the '88' refers to a particular individual so that the person applying the cancel could be identified, for audit purposes of no other.

Here is one with audit number 179 on it confirming the bank but not the numbering system, i thought it may be the day of the year but it does not fit. Could it be the 179th transaction of the day?...Dave

Thanks Dave - great to illustrate another example in this topic .... I think the numbering representing "transactions per day" (or per week) is plausible

P.S. I have never found out what SOLA means (as per your document - a "SOLA of Exchange....")
..... I assume it's an acronym for a type of banking transaction ....any knowledge / ideas, etc. ??

SOLA = Single bill of exchange (no duplicate exists)
SECOND [and THIRD] = bill of exchange that is a duplicate or triplicate of the original [labeled "FIRST"], and 1/2 [or 1/3] of the duty stamps value is affixed to each copy.

Many thanks David

'SOLA' doesn't get a Google result in the first 100 pages or so I remained ignorant (and lazy)

...... if only I'd added 'Bill of Exchange' to the query, all would have been revealed! :) :) :)

The term 'Via' is also used where there is more than one copy ( sola) of the Bill.

Sola what!

I guess we should mention we have shown 2 colours in the cancels, Black & Blue, wonder if any other colours are out there? and what significance they may hold.
