TASMANIAN BRASS BANDS, etc - real photo cards

#1 Post by Ross Ewington » Mon Jan 04, 2010 10:38 pm

Brass bands (Scottish pipe bands, harmonica bands, military bands and suchlike) were a very important part of the cultural life of Tasmania from the late
19th century through to the 1950s/60s. The "peak" of band activity in Tasmania coincided with that of picture postcard production (early
1900s until the 1950s) so one could assume that real photo (and possibly some printed) cards should be not that difficult to find ...
....but they are!!

I recently discovered the real photo card below included with some family papers. The view is captioned "GORMANSTON BAND" and the photographer
was Alfred S. Rutter of Burnie (Kodak Australia postcard stock with "Rutter's Studio Burnie" printed on the message side). The card is unused
but cards by Rutter are not that difficult to date as he only operated in Burnie between 1912 and 1928.

The location is West Park (Burnie) and the photo was probably taken during the band contest held annually at the famous Burnie Carnival.
Judging by the uniforms worn and the number of telephone wires visible in the background, I would date this RP card as being from the mid 1920s.

This real photo card by A. Rutter (Burnie) would date from the 1920s and features an "in action" portrait of the "QUEENSTOWN BAND"

The photo was probably taken at the same event as the card featuring the Gormanston Band also by Rutter - see top post on this page.
