Souvenir from Devonport & Ulverstone, Read the Age etc.

Ross, I thought I had better start a new Topic as your query about the Furners Hotel Card (Ulverstone) with the advertisement " Read the Age, The Leader and Every Saturday" in the stamp box on the back of the card is alot more involved than I first thought.

I believe your card is from a set as listed. All have the same back, same sort of printing and layout, also most have Souvenir from Ulverstone Tasmania or Souvenir from Devonport Tasmania printed on the front of the card.

The Ulverstone cards were published by W.A. Skinner Newsagent Ulverstone and the Devonport cards were published by W.W. Pettit Bookseller Devonport.
Probably published sometime in late 1904. Not sure how many were in each set, perhaps 6 ? I can list the following,

All the following 9 cards have this back.

Ulverstone

1. Furners Hotel / Scene on the Leven River. (I don't think this was intended as a advertising card, just that Furners Hotel was and still is a prominent building in Ulverstone.) There is no Souvenir from Ulverstone printed on this card. My copy is postally used 1/11/09
2. Reibey Street, Ulverstone. Postally used 17/12/04
3. Dial Range Ulverstone. Postally used 17/12/04
4. Lobster Creek Leven River. unused
5. Penguin Tasmania. Postally used 22/12/04 (No Souvenir printed)

Devonport.

1. Devonport Wharf. Unused
2. Rooke Street Devonport. Postally used ?/?/04
3. Devonport (Looking North) Postally used 20/12/04
4. Victoria Bridge Devonport. Used but no date.

Just found this multiview "Souvenir from Devonport" card by W.W. Pettit. It looks similar to cards from the same period
by Robert Jolley of Melbourne ..... I wonder if there was a connection?
