Hobart Parcels Office cds on Pictorials

#1 Post by Peter Allan » Wed Jun 09, 2010 8:31 pm

The Hobart Parcels Office CDS is more often found on higher value stamps as I understand it. I have not been able to find a clear copy of this post mark until very recently. The few copies I have seen have been partial strikes. Can anyone confirm that the attached cds is in fact the Parcels Office, and tell me what the 'average' quality of this strike might be and what the level of scarcity is ?

Peter,

I have been looking for one of these for over 20 years - I am green!!!!!

The best I have found so far is a partial strike as shown below; date is 19 SE 06.

I believe there must be two handstamps because my partial has a clear stop after the P

Colin,
Thanks for posting your image.
I have had a closer look at the 6d, and there is a stop after the " P" in the same location as yours although its small and not terribly obvious on the original- see enlargement below.

I have now posted my two partial strikes as well - all have the stop and they clearly look like the same hand stamp to me. It does seem to be difficult to find this cds as a full strike. Does anyone else have any other examples?

It's really not that scarce a cancel, HOWEVER, since it is most often found on tablets, it's often hard to get complete. Can be found used up into the 1920's, when later in life the "p" is removed

The following example, dated 15 January 1910, was bought on Ebay in June 2006. As with the first example from 1909, only the last digit of the year is shown.

The following illustration is a part strike of the large oval Chief Parcels Office Hobart cancel. It was bought on Ebay in April 2006. The date appears to be 29 September, but the year is absent. The stamp is SG 254c (with a 'T' perfin), so the year must be 1911 or later. Does anyone know when this cancel was first used?

Given the amount of time elapsed since the first post on this subject I apologise my lateness. I have only just started getting my Hobart and Launceston Pictorial CDS in order (massive job) and was scanning the bulletin board subjects and found this item on the Hobart parcel post cds.

Having only been collecting a few years I tend to agree with JH as I have three Pictorials (1dx1 and 2dx2) of which one has a very clear strike and the two others are partials. I have seen a few on ebay and they are mostly on the 6d and did not buy them as I dont specialise on Hobart and Launceston. Dont know why mine are on the lower values unless they were accompanied by other stamps and broken up when floated off.

I have another four; 2x9d Sideface and a 6d and 1/- tablet. The one recurring theme is that they all have the 4 P time. Pictorial date use is from Dec 06 to july 11. Use on other stamps from May 05 to Feb 10.

Possibly I have been lucky but feel that it is only a matter of being vigilant and sorting the wheat from the chaff. Picked mine up in lots being sold for the stamp and not the cds with the vendor unaware of any value placed on cds.

Hope this puts another persons perspective on it.

Regards JC

I have over a dozen examples of this postmark with most on higher value stamps (tablets, sidefaces and pictorials) and all bar 2 have the 4 PM time. The other 2 are 8 A from 1908 (year as 8 not 08) and 9.45A from 1906.

David McNamee in his Registered Mail exhibit has examples (4 PM again) of this cds used as a backstamp (see http://www.aape.org/exhibit_view_page.a ... eNumber=88)
