Re: DOUBLE CIRCULAR POSTMARK ON 2 chalon
I doubt that this postmark has a Tasmanian origin - probably an arrival marking from 'somewhere else'.

It is possibly the C-TOWN double arc date stamp which was introduced in 1862 so would fit with the 2d Chalon numeral wmk.. The stamp would normally have been obliterated with the 2nd allocation '16' of Campbell Town but unusually this may have been cancelled with the date stamp. You would need to measure the arcs to be certain

thanks Malcolm ...yes, that's the date stamp .... now I can read it standing on my head!
The Type U1(i) cds ('C-TOWN') was used between 1861 and 1865

I love reading posts where the unknown is made known. Knowledge and perseverance. Thank you for your post Haymik and Malcolm for his expertise. Perhaps we should all have a second look at our Chalons.
