Hi all, can anyone tell me where to stop the first allocation in 1857-69 chalons and start the second allocation,
I presume it is by date, but not sure. many thanks John Piercy
BN cancels
Re: BN cancels
Hi John,
Identifying whats first and whats second allocation on these stamps can be tricky and you will often see BNs incorrectly identified in auctions and Ebay etc so best to always confirm.
First Allocation was withdrawn in (Feb?) 1861.
Ideally you have the cancel on a dated cover but obviously this is usually not the case.
You need to be able to pick the difference from the design of the numeral.
There is a useful guide to some of the key differences in font in the Green Books Vol 1 where there are some illustrations. Some numbers in first are easy to pick but not all.
If you have second allocation on later stamps, you can also be sure except a small number of first allocation were re-used in Second. You can build you own collection as a point of reference.
Otherwise feel free to show images here and someone will tell you.
Pete
