Crown Seals on pre-Pictorial Issues

#1 Post by RogerKinns » Wed Sep 23, 2009 11:25 pm

Crown seals were sometimes used as cancellations on pre-pictorial issues, either in error or because other cancellers were not available.
They are usually hard to read and complete strikes are scarce, not least because sidefaces and keyplates are small format stamps. I only
have Penghana and The Oaks. I'll post these and invite other collectors do the same.

Here is a pair of strikes of 'Penghana' on a vertical pair of 2d sidefaces. The upper strike is almost complete and fairly easy to read. This was bought on Ebay in July 2007.

This one is a large part strike of 'The Oaks' on a 0.5d keyplate. The 'Post Office The (...)' and crown are clear. Bought on Ebay in January 2008.

Possibly unique. Sold by Tasmanian Stamp Auctions 7/2006
for a "hammer price" of AU$825.

Lefroy, Glenore and North Dundas Road also well known. Lefroy and Glenore were used prior to issue of numeral.

KELSO - probably the most common crown seal impression to
be found on a 1d or 2d Pictorial but I think I have only seen
one other strike on a pre-Pictorial issue.

Kelso crown seal on a stamp other than pictorial certainly is unusual. Tablets were still in use after 1900 and thus it is unlikely that the example on 1/2d tablet is pre-1900.

PENGHANA - Crown Seal impressions on vertical 1d QV s/face pair.

The impression on the left is just about the clearest example I
have ever seen on any stamp!

TASMANIAN CROWN SEALS - a survey

#11 Post by Ross Ewington » Sun Jan 24, 2010 1:02 pm

This "per favour" strike of the DELORAINE crown seal was sold on eBay during 12/2009.

A couple of years ago I was nearly consigned for sale by auction, the following impression of the same DELORAINE crown seal on a postcard mailed in 1908.

.... at the last moment alas, the owner decided that she would "keep it for her family" and I wonder whether collectors will ever see this item again at some future date. Fortunately, I had my trusty scanner "fired up" at the time it "crossed my desk" so at least there is this visual record.

As the Deloraine Type 3 cds postmark was obviously in perfect working order at the time, I imagine that the crown seal may have been added to impress
the addressee, a "Miss V. Weller". (terrible pun - sorry!)

I regard this example to be also a "per favour" impression. The obvious difference in clarity of the strike would suggest that the first example above was
produced long after that applied to the postcard in 1908.

IF YOU HAVE IMAGES OF IMPRESSIONS OF THIS AND ANY OTHER TASMANIAN CROWN SEALS (dating from 1900 and on),
PLEASE POST THEM IN THIS TOPIC. QUESTIONS, COMMENTS AND INFORMATION ARE ALSO SOLICITED.

KELSO POST OFFICE centrally struck on a 1d Pictorial

This is the most common of all crown seal impressions found on the Pictorial issues but
quality varies greatly. This example (to be auctioned by TSA in June 2010) would be hard
to beat for clarity and completeness!

Thanks Geoff. Your example would be from the same per favour "batch" as the first item (from Deloraine) in this post.

I know that I have several Crown Seals, including, I think, more than one Kelso. I must look them out and post the images on this board (when I work out how to!!)

An example of the Penghana crown seal used on up-rated postal card with additional 1d to meet the fee for advertising in the Post Office to which it is addressed. This service lasted for about 18 months. Penghana post office was destroyed by fire soon after this was posted.

It is General Post Office I believe. I have seen another example and will try and locate an image. there are other words in the design but not sure what they read.

further to the query from Revenuer I have found the image of Crown Seal for Stamp Branch General Post Office which was struck on 1901 OPSO Registered envelope from GPO to Postmaster at Oatlands (presumably a delivery of stamps ordered) Not sure if it is the same as that posted by Revenuer but comments welcomed.
