Re: NEED ASSISTANCE WITH IDENTIFYING POSTMARKS? - ASK HERE !
Hi I having been collecting Australian States stamps for about 30 years and have never looked at post marks. Now with the stamps I need getting harder to get I am now looking at the postmarks. Can anyone correct the post marks I have named if they are in correct and help with the identification of the others with whether they are common or more dificult to find.
Thanks for any help.http://www.slickpic.com/s/M05NM1DNRMM0Q ... oto#619931http://www.slickpic.com/s/M05NM1DNRMM0Q ... oto#619931

Re: NEED ASSISTANCE WITH IDENTIFYING POSTMARKS? - ASK HERE !
Hi, The postmarks you have identified look pretty right so far.
For Tasmania, collectors have grouped the post marks into at least 4 major groupings: the bared numerals ( first and second allocation), the datestamps on Pictorials - Dec 1899 to 1912/13, the Commonwealth period postmarks from 1913, and the early date stamps form 1865 to 1899 . Luckily there are good references for three of these main catagories. The date stamps on Pictorials are particularly popular with collectors and the TPS has provided the current public list and rarity ratings on our website here http://www.tps.org.au/PDFs/Pictorial%20 ... Nov-09.pdf. There are other useful references on our site as well.
Our recent editions of the TPS journal, "The Courier" has the most up to date listing of the second allocation bared numerals - Editions 49 - 51, with 51 having a table of rarity ratings. You can buy these from the TPS for $10 each. Avery and Hardinge published Commonwealth Period date stamp listings and cancellations in two volumes - "Tasmanian Hand Cancellations 1913 - 88". The early date stamps are not currently listed in any publication. You have a couple there including Deap Lead with is scarce.
Although it might seem a bit of a pain to obtain copies of the above publications, just one 'find' could easily repay the investment you made.
If you decide to study Tas post marks in detail its definitely worth getting these publications.
In the meantime I can see Barred Numeral 52 of Launceston ( common) and 95 of Westbury ( common) in your lot. The other date stamps not annotated look fairly readable and i dont see anything scarce there. The Strahan No 2 on Pictorial is correctly noted as 1R - theres a brief explanation of the rarity rating in the on-line PDF mentioned above.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Pete

Hi Luis ...long time no hear!!
yes, it is Strahan. The "defining feature" is the "code letter" above the dateline ... with a couple of exceptions,
only the larger offices used these "codes" and at the time of this cancel, Strahan was a very busy port and rail centre.

Thanks Ross! I was confused because in the "Rarity Ratings of Cancels" (PDF) Strahan is misspelled as "Stahan". I got excited thinking I had found a rare one! So, I take it is not a Strahan No.2? Thanks again, Luis M.

Strahan No.2 was used at a different post office (at the Strahan West railway station) - the post office
became Railway Telegraph Office after June 30 1901 and the postal facilities were withdrawn which may
explain why the postmark is rated RR.

Hi
I think the last comment posted by Ross may also apply to the Strahan No2 cancellation shown in Murfz1 question previous to this discussion. It looks as though it may only be the more common Strahan cancellation.
Here is a scan of the Strahan No2 cancel so you can compare murfz. Regards Daryl

Does this look like BN59 to you or is it the BN50 used at Lake River (the stamp has the TAS with connecting lines
watermark)? If it is BN59, I assume it's the type used at Glen Quoin.
I don't have an example of BN50 used at Lake River to make a comparison.
Any assistance will be appreciated!

Ross, this is a beauty. It is the 59 used at Glen Quoin indeed. A very scarce item indeed. The 50 is quite different in regards spacing etc

Hello,
can someone make out the numeral on this one? Something in the 320'ies/330'ies I guess, but what exactly?
Thank you.

Re: NEED ASSISTANCE WITH IDENTIFYING POSTMARKS? - ASK HERE !
Does anyone know if any of these "squiggles and lines" cancels have been tied to any particular offices?
Re: NEED ASSISTANCE WITH IDENTIFYING POSTMARKS? - ASK HERE !
Ross,
I think some of these are seen from more than one office ( or at least similar patterns were used in more than one location.)
When I get a moment I can have a look at David McNamee's first allocation collection ( which he has kindly sent me and which I should put on-line on our website when I get a chance) as he has some tied examples. For instance your first example on the left looks similar to a Macquarie Plains pen cancel.
David may be able comment with a more definitive answer than I can provide.

Ross, believe it or not I think this is what remained of the first type of 187 at end of it's life. Quite rare in this state but lmost unreadable of course.

RE: pen marks off cover. There is nothing reliable to identify particular offices, except those that used initials or date or numerals. There are resemblances to tied markings, but I would not put my reputation on the line for any of them.

Re: NEED ASSISTANCE WITH IDENTIFYING POSTMARKS? - ASK HERE !
Could someone tell me which of the Launceston types this postmark is. My thoughts are that it is the type 2 (Green book vol 1 Fig 96 for image and Vol2 page 73 for date). I found a couple of these in an envelope of common Launceston types and this example is the nicer of the two.
Re: NEED ASSISTANCE WITH IDENTIFYING POSTMARKS? - ASK HERE !
Geoff,
I probably know as much or less than you about this cds but for my money I agree with your assesment.
This cds is not on my radar at all and I find it interesting that a 'modern' type of cds was made as early as 1868. The earliest 'modern' type 1s are 1877 as I understand it.
I hope someone an shed more light on this.
Great find!

Re: NEED ASSISTANCE WITH IDENTIFYING POSTMARKS? - ASK HERE !
I am not an expert on Launceston cancels but I think this one is different to the example shown on pg. 96 of Vol. I of the "Green Books". Fig. 96 shows the same diameter [24mm] and the position of Launceston and Tasmania appear to be similar, however, the day/month slugs and the year slugs are much higher on the 3d. pictorial. If you look at the day and month slugs on the pictorial stamp they are almost in line with the "L" and 2nd. "N" of Launceston, whereas on the example in the book, the day and month slugs are well below the "L" and "N". But how often do you find Launceston Type 1 cancels without a code letter?
Re: Impression Bay postmark - rating please
Hello can anyone tell me the rating of Impression Bay please,[img][/img]
Re: Impression Bay postmark - rating please
I don't think your image has displayed properly? At least I can't see it, just the <Img> tags.
I can check for you when I return home Friday if no one else has replied but will need to either see the image or a description ie date , wording on the postmark and possibly the stamp that it's on.
Pete

Here is the current listing for Impression Bay
P.S. for the sake of good order please post queries etc, into the correct category (I have moved this post across to the Postmarks to 1912 category)
P.P.S. the 'Img' facility can only be used if you can access your image on the internet. The TPS BB encourage members to upload
images to the site directly using the 'Upload attachment' facility (see below text box when making a post). It is similar to (and as simple
as) adding an image to an e-mail or uploading same to an eBay listing. Please contact me if you need assistance.
