West Coast Postcard set with map and wallet
Here is an interesting set of 12 West Coast Cards in presentation wallet, including a map of the area showing roads and railway lines.
Unfortunately there is no date or any details of the publisher or photographer. The words "Printed in England are the only clue.
The map is useful in that it shows the many small towns including some of special interest to post mark collectors - Teepookana, Comstock, Kings River, Montezuma and others.
Can anyone offer any further information ? The set must date from around 1910 plus or minus a few years I would think.
I will not post all cards unless someone particularly want to see them, but the complete list is as follows:
Regatta Point
Montezuma Falls
Mt Lyell Haulage
Beach, W Strahan
Strahan Wharf
Pieman River, Emu Bay Railway
Mt Lyell Smelters
Zeehan
Queenstwon
King River Gorge
N.E. Dundas Railway
King River Gorge ( another view)

Re: West Coast Postcard set with map and wallet
Nice discovery Pete !! ... I have never seen one of these folders before.
A clue to who the publisher was may be in the photos themselves .... the view of Regatta Point
looks very "familiar" (i.e. I have possibly seen it used for a postcard). It would be good if
you can post images of the the other views as this may assist in identifying the publisher/photograph
and approx. publication date.
cheers ... Ross

A great item Pete, especially the presention wallet. I have not seen the wallet before either! I have the set of 12 cards, none are postally used but 3 of the cards are dated August 1928 and have interesting local information. See scans.
PS. I was one of the unlucky under bidders !!!
View of Queenstown
Montezuma Falls, N E Dundas. Tasmania.
Zeehan & Mt Zeehan.

Re: West Coast Postcard set with map and wallet
Mike, thanks for that. The comments on the back of your cards are certainly interesting and help to give a sense of how things were on the W Coast in 1928! I have just noticed a pencil notation on the back of my Pieman River View which reads " Taken out Wed May 29 1928 8:45 PM". hard to say what this might mean, and may not relate to the cards at all, but the date confirms along with yours that this set may have been current in 1928/29 rather than earlier as I had assumed.
I've added four more cards to my original post and I expect some viewers will recognise some of them as I have certainly seen a few previously myself used and un-used.
Pete

Re: West Coast Postcard set with map and wallet
The railway line to Pillinger (illustrated on the map) closed in 1929 so that provides an approximate late date.
The King River Gorge photo looks very familiar.
If someone has an image of the Mount Lyell Tourist Association view of the King River
Gorge can they compare it with the image above and report (I have copies on hand of
a number of the cards from the series but not this one). If the same photo was used it narrows
the publication date down to the 1920s (are there any examples of the Mt Lyell Tourist
cards used before 1920?)
As the cards were printed in G.B. it also supports a post 1914 date for publication.

Re: West Coast Postcard set with map and wallet
Yes you are right Ross. Here is a scan of the King River Gorge card from the Mount Lyell Tourist Association. The picture is the same. I am afraid none of my Mt Lyell Association cards have dates, ie all are unused. (these cards are alot rarer postally used!!)
If you check my book "The Semi-Official Postcards of Tasmania" page 18, lists the following dates 21/2/20, 11/5/20 9/3/21 all hand dated and 31/8/20 postally used. So to sum up, it was common practice to use photos on postcards over a period of time by different publishers. So the same view can turn up in a number of different sets.

Re: West Coast Postcard set with map and wallet
Have just noticed that the following Mt Lyell Tourist Association card "Mount Lyell Mine, Western Tasmania" has printed on the back the production figures up to the end of 1917. So this set must of been printed in 1918 or later.
