SECURITY OVERPRINTS - CENSUS in PROGRESS
Security overprints (usually applied by handstamp) have been recorded produced by a
number of Tasmanian businesses or national firms with offices in Tasmania:
Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMPS),
Fitzgeralds (Department Stores)
Neptune Oil Company
Shell Oil,
T&G (Insurance),
and W.D. & H.O. Wills
This discussion forum provides the opportunity to conduct a census of these overprints.
You are invited to submit your images for inclusion. I will continue to edit this first
posting to compile a listing for the different companies and overprints until we get
something that could be published at a future date in the TPS' journal "The Courier".
All contributors will be acknowledged as co-authors (unless they wish to remain anonymous)
Information on how to post images to this categories are provided from a link on the
BOARD INDEX page. If you have trouble sorting this out, you can post an image directly
from your computer as an attachment (see Upload Attachment button) or ask me for
assistance.
Here is my first contribution - AMPS on various decimal series stamp duties.

Re: SECURITY OVERPRINTS - CENSUS in PROGRESS

can you please provide the "watermark status" of the Platypus values?

Re: SECURITY OVERPRINTS - CENSUS in PROGRESS
7.173 2d deep mauve - includeing one on piece with "Missing 7" from the opverprint
7.177 3d chestnut
7.212 3c light grey-blue
7.216 5c yellow-orange pair on proving piece
Re AMP o'print on $ values - yes it is 3.5mm, watermark would apear to be no watermark at least on the items not on piece - its a bit hard to tell on the items on piece without the watermark deterctors.

Re: SECURITY OVERPRINTS - CENSUS in PROGRESS
T&G Life overprint:
Numeral
7.145 1d new bluw re-engraved
7.147 2d yellow-brown re-engraved
7.149 4d blue - two different shades
Platypus:
1d deep green
2d deep mauve
3d chestnut watermark unknown as they are all on piece
The 1d/3d item is a nice proving piece showing the partially obscured overprint - demonstrating that it is an overprint not a cancel.

Re: SECURITY OVERPRINTS - CENSUS in PROGRESS
I think this is a 'discovery' on this stamp ...... NEPTUNE (Oil) on a rouletted 1d Numeral *
also a SHELL on the the same revenue issue
* Dave has a b&w photocopy of the same NEPTUNE overprint on a 2d Platypus S/Duty on his site

Re: SECURITY OVERPRINTS - CENSUS in PROGRESS
It's been a while since something 'new' turned up ..... found this yesterday
A 1/- green (Last Numeral Issue) Craig 7.153 cancelled in 1956 with an AMPS h/s applied in purple
..and this as well ...a 5d apple green Platypus cancelled in 1956 with an AMPS h/s applied in bright pink
('normal' example included to illustrate that the same h/s was used on both stamps which were cancelled only about a month apart)
