Attention Tasmanian Postal Historians
Access to source documents for Tasmanian postal historians seems to have become more difficult since the 1980s.
Once, the Tasmanian Postal Museum held originals or copies of many useful documents such as Postal Guides, Letter Books and Post Office records. In more recent times the location these has become problematic.
Fortunately, Postal Historian Tony Orchard had the foresight to copy many of these original documents when the Postal History Museum was disbanded. Tony has recently offered his large holding of photocopies to the TPS and we are in the process of adding these to our library.
Owing to the generosity of one TPS member, a number of the Postal Guides have also been scanned to PDF and up-loaded to our website.
The guides contain copies of the current Post Office Act, Stamp Duty Act, postal rates, new postal services ( routes), offices opened and closed for the year, Telegraph offices and rates, money order offices both within Tasmanian , Australia and overseas ( where Tasmanian had reciprocal arrangements).
Our Library catalogue with listings of current Archival documents is here.
Downloadable PDFs of a number of Postal Guides are located here
